I typically begin with the homework assigned by the students teacher, as theses are most often the questions that appear on the tests. Reviewing the practice tests, if available, is also key, as many teachers use only slightly modified versions for the real test. For more advanced students, or those wishing to earn the highest marks, I will design extra problems, both conceptual and mathematic based, to continue to challenge them. This can include something a simple as more problems to work on, or as complex as having the student re-write previous problems to give them a chance to see all the different angles that the concept can be tested. As a parent of two school-aged children I have had the oppurtunity to learn about the newest teaching methods employed by teachers at this time. We often work together on math and science.
