In tutoring math, the individual needs to have their homework present and, if available, old/recent tests so they may learn from the past as well as the present. Math adds unto itself, so understanding previous rules and equations are necessary for applying them to future classes. To help them, I needed to review their texts, and find out the tools available to them. When teaching, you need feedback. When teaching mathematics, you might test a student, challenging them to solve a problem. If you have failed to communicate, then you may need to explore other modes of communication.
