My experience with tutoring began in high school, when I started assisting elementary students with homework through one of my clubs. Throughout the two years I was involved, I regularly helped 6 students, along with 6 students that I met with irregularly. I have experience tutoring children with behavioral issues, learning disabilities (dyslexia, ADHD, ADD), as well as students on the Autism Spectrum. I have 15 years experience in the lab. My educational requirements to be a med tech means I have taken many science and biology classes. I have had oppotunities to subsitute teach at my childrens' school and really enjoyed the experience. I enjoy working with children I get a real thrill when they get the concept/idea that I am instructing them in . I believe that given time and instruction a child that is willing to learn will learn. I have worked in biology for over 10 years, and have a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Western Michigan University. I have taught 250+ college level students in lecture, labs, and in more informal classroom and research settings, and have also worked with children of all ages in nature programs. I believe that teaching styles need to be flexible to the student. I have worked with a very wide variety of students, from the severely limited autistic youth to the highly gifted medical student. While approach and focus might vary for the individual or subject matter the essence remains the same. I try to envision at least 3 different ways of approaching a problem, I discuss material but let the students ask questions which I then tailor my explanations toward. Everyone sees a problem slightly differently and if you allow yourself an open mind and creative thinking often you can help them break through a difficult problem because you are able to see it their way.
