I have been successfully tutoring for over 10 years. I have helped students transform their grades from F's to A's. It has been a very rewarding experience, since my students get to understand the subject a lot better as well as improve their grades. I love working with students of all ages and teaching the many subjects I know. My specialties are math, science, and standardized testing. I am very patient and friendly. I am also able to explain an idea in many different ways. Many students tell me that I can explain concepts better than their teachers. My comments on tutoring Entrance Exams : In particular the ISEE exam.

I assess the student's level of mastery by listening to parents, communicating with the student (in whatever appropriate way needed) and then doing some basic testing. Once the student is assessed, I design a learning environment and activities that coincide with the student's specific strengths, while adding some elements of challenge. I tend to work in a very focused way for 10-15 minutes, and then add in tactile activities (like Bannana Grams for example) for 10 minutes or so, in order to maintain the student's attention. Children and youth who are struggling to read and write get patient assistance to learn the words correctly. My work will improve writing techniques (including essays and basic writing skills), reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and literary creativity. For younger children I work with acquiring reading skills, word recognition, pattern recognition, spel ... read more

My "teaching style" changes depending on the needs of my students. In all cases, an initial assessment of both the academic level and the temperament of each student are necessary before I establish a particular style. Some students are comfortable with a quieter, more formal tutor, while others are successful with a more casual, animated tutor. In every situation, I look for opportunities to give positive reinforcement. For example, I usually warm-up with material the student feels relatively confident about, then add new or more challenging concepts, and end with the student feeling successful practicing on his or her own.
I have enjoyed teaching and tutoring a wide range of students in a vast array of different settings. Most recently, I have tutored reading to 4th graders at an elementary school, taught ESL and GED subjects to adults through an adult education center, an ... read more

I have been a substitute teacher for about 10 years specializing in math & physics. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering plus 20+ years of maintenance/engineering experience. I incorporate practical examples in teaching to give students in depth knowledge in a practical sense. I gather my examples from my varied career experiences from the Military, Aircraft, Engineering, Manufacturing/Maintenance & Computer fields. I sporadically tutors students in my specialty.
I use the Active Participation strategy because it engages the learner not only in understanding but in contributing as well. This active learning process combined with introduction of practical uses/examples of the the subject matter provides a deeper meaning. But most of all the Objective,Purpose, and what their interests are, must be known so that these can be incorporated in the learning process.

Whether the lesson is necessary for academic requirements or for leisure, I have always enjoyed passing my knowledge of the French language and culture to others, adapting my lessons to the level required by the student(s). Not everybody can flourish at the same pace; therefore my patience is an added bonus. I place emphasis on areas that most meet the student need, be it speaking, writing or grammar, and in some cases, culture. I have taught French at exam level as well as casual conversational level. An important part of any first lesson is to assess student need.
I am French born and educated, with an MA in English from the Institut Catholique de Paris. Married to an Englishman, with two grown-up daughters, I have lived in California for the past 13 years, prior to which we lived in the UK. A Little Bit About Me...

I am working toward teaching at the university level and have, of course in the process, taught students at the university level in literature and Arabic. But I enjoy tutoring and teaching students at a variety of levels because the different levels require different creativity and different techniques that create an ability to think on one's toes that feeds the classroom energy and enthusiasm.
I honestly believe that creativity is the guiding means of teaching techniques, resources, and assignments. All students require different things and creativity allows for an agility and flexibility that works with different students and keeps the teaching dialogue sustainable. This creativity is of course contingent on lesson plans, subject knowledge, and an array of resources.

I approach instruction from the view that “teach[ing] a man to fish, will feed him for a lifetime”. I am committed to building on what my students bring with them, using this as a fulcrum on which to hinge their learning. This approach succeeds in helping students understand that they are capable of and even responsible for teaching themselves?–?a skill I see as a necessity in life, especially once a student can no longer expect formal instruction. In addition to my own experiences with learning several languages, I have benefited from coursework in Behavioral Psychology, which has taught me to create positive classroom atmosphere. My students note my enthusiasm for language and express appreciation for my linguistic explanations.
I have spent 6 years teaching university-level German language courses and reading comprehension & writing courses. Before this, I spent 2 years as a vol ... read more

I have worked as a tutor for about 6 years and worked full time as the designated class room teacher, as a High School Math teacher for 2 years. Occasionally, I work as a substitute teacher. Over time, I have acquired a wealth of teaching experience. The areas I have taught/tutored in are Algebra, Geometry, Middle School Science and Elementary School English Language Arts. During my occupation as a full time Math teacher, we were required to attend regular Math trainings and workshops. As a result, I developed excellent teaching skills, not only in content matter competency but also in teaching style.
My teaching style varies depending on the number of students taught and the personality of the students. Also, teaching style is also influenced by the subject taught. For example, Mathematics is a subject that can very easily be taught by incorporating games which catch the attent ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I left the business world in 1999 to make good on my goal of completing my degree and teaching. I wanted the strongest foundation possible, so I chose General Studies, sometimes known as "Humanities." Since getting my first credential in 2002, I have taught in a wide variety of classroom settings, including having my own classroom for both Elementary and Middle School. I have taught as a substitute and permanent teacher in Special Education classrooms. I have taught Math, Science and Language Arts.
I like teaching. I like teaching individuals. I enjoy the challenge of adapting my style and my information to the unique set of skills and experiences that each individual brings along with them. No two people are alike. So I try not to teach each student as if she is just like the last guy. What is called the "Affective Filter" is what I deal with most: that is the part of each student ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Most recently, I was engaged in research and writing of my dissertation. I worked at a local High school for three years teaching inner-city Hispanic youth. I was the primary special education teacher for all students grades 9-12. During this time I was also a graduate assistant, co-teaching with professors and supervising graduate students during their internships in local schools. For the past two years I have been working with Riverside Publishing. With Riverside Publishing I normed the WJC IV Test of Achievement.
In order to account for individual learning styles and engage learners appropriately, my lessons include tasks that incorporated visual, audio, and kinesthetic learning styles. Visual tasks were presented using the whiteboard, computer or manipulatives to list the essential points of a lecture, and students were provided with an outline to follow along with during ins ... read more
