My way of teaching can vary depending on the student because not all students learn the same. Some students can be completely clueless about a certain area or problem, while others may know a little more but get lost at a certain point. What I tend to do is to carefully go over the book instructions, chapter section, notes etc.. because I know that sometimes part the reason why they don't understand is because he/she did not read the instructions or did but still did not understand them. Afterwards I will let he/she start a problem and if he/she still has trouble, I will then explain very carefully and then I will ask if he/she understood; if not i will explain again if yes, then I will give him/her a different example very similar and won't let him see the notes to see if he really did in fact understood. Like said before my teaching techniques can vary but this was a quick example of m ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I teach at the intersection of affirmation and discipline: I believe in celebrating student learning and creativity, while also taking knowledge—and students—seriously. My experience in a summer camp setting has taught me to meet each student where they are and co-create unique strategies for success. I believe in teaching the value of dialogue and cross-disciplinary thinking, in addition to helping students learn academic material and skills.
As a student at Rollins College, I had the opportunity to serve as a peer mentor to a group of first-year students. I also worked in the writing center and as an editor for a literary journal. My studies in anthropology and experience writing an honors thesis on homelessness taught me to think critically and holistically. I have worked as a summer camp counselor for teenagers (June- August 2008 and 2009) and then as co-director of the camp (2 ... read more

I enjoy teaching because it allows me to contribute to a student's understanding of invaluable concepts which will improve and enrich their lives. I am sociable and easy to talk to, and I remember what it was like being in school and struggling with difficult concepts. All students can learn, and I believe that the key is finding a way for each individual student to personally relate to the material. If difficult concepts can be presented in a way that is tailored to each student's specific needs and interests, their potential may be reached.
As a graduate of the University of Florida, I earned two bachelor's degrees. I believe that tutoring is a great way to assist teachers. The reason I say this is because teachers often have many children in their classes and as a tutor I would be able to work one on one with a child who might need a little extra attention. I also thing that when children are given a chance to grasp difficult ideas they gain self confidence and become encouraged to persevere. I also believe that children can learn to love learning, and a child who is given the chance to be encouraged in their learning they will develop a love to the act of learning and therefore become life long learners. I believe in the ability of children and look forward to working with them in a way that will give them confidence and encouragement to work hard and succeed in school.

I am originally from Puerto Rico, and recently moved to Gainesville. I obtained a Spanish teacher temporary certification from the state of Florida last May. My experiences teaching have been extremely positive and I would love to continue sharing my knowledge.
A child perennial question of “Why?” sets in motion the intent of my teaching philosophy, in which I, as the instructor, facilitate the discovery of possibilities to most of their queries. I propose a teaching philosophy in which the student reverts to that infantile state of wanting to know more. Motivating my students to learn is one of my primary goals as an instructor. I cannot simply relay information without a specific sense of purpose because that only perpetuates a student’s aversion for knowledge. By setting in motion a dynamic classroom, we, the teacher and the students, begin a mentorship in which we meet eac ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that good teaching, like quality learning, comes with hard work. Having had the chance to see students grow with time, I have learned that patience, respect, and having fun are the best ingredients for a productive and positive learning experience. Often times, having a positive mentor can be that major difference in a student's life, and to that end I believe that tutoring is about more than just academic learning, but also about building relationships and learning essential life skills.
Although my chosen field of study is history, my passion is for education and learning. While earning both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees, I have acquired an essential skill set for working in the academic world, which includes excellent writing, reading, and critical-thinking skills, in addition to a proficiency in Spanish acquired through years of classroom study and travel in L ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a very patient, dedicated, and energetic person. I like to incorporate riddles, rhymes, and games into my tutoring sessions to aid kids in learning. It is my belief that all kids can learn. As a child I was told I would never surpass an elementary school because I was failing to thrive. There were so many people who believed in me and as a result I incorporate the same mindset they had with me to contribute to the successes of children who are much like I was.

During my Doctoral studies in Spanish Literature at University of Florida from 1992 through 2005, I have tutored several students in Spanish, and some in English Grammar. Some individual students used my services over long periods, one in particular for about two years. I am able to provide references from the parents of the latter. I earned my B.A. and M.A. in Languages and Linguistics from Florida Atlantic University. I went on to graduate from University of Florida in 2005 with a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature.
I begin my tutoring session by determining the area of Spanish or English Grammar in which the student shows the most difficulty. I ask my student to present a copy of his or her last exam. I engage the student in Spanish conversation at the appropriate level, and I examine his or her reading and writing ability in the language. In contrast to what I have observed from many ... read more
