Social Studies Teacher with expertise in writing

I have 5 years working in school districts in the Philadelphia area. I recently finished student teacher at a middle school in Philadelphia. I am very knowledge in all aspects of history, geography, and government. I am very well written and well read and I can help provide support research and writing papers. This is specialty.
I am very easy going but still goal oriented. I like to facilitate learning instead of just providing the information to you child. Setting the student on the right course to find the information on their own not only provides the student with accurate information but shows them how to be self sufficient which bolsters their confidence and a student.

My comments on tutoring World History : I hold two degrees in History (BA and Master's), in which I am extremely interested. I have published "A Brief History of the World". Understanding the past helps us understand the present. As a College Professor (History, Philosophy, Ethics, English) with many years of tutoring experience, I have helped many High School and College students to succeed academically. I am patient and understanding.

I have been teaching college (History, Philosophy, Ethics, writing, reading, social studies) since the early 1980's. I have taught in New York (LaGuardia Community College), Connectiuct (Three Rivers Community College), New Jersey (Mercer County Community College) and Pennsylvania (Bucks County and Montgomery County Community Colleges and ). I have also taught online (University of Phoenix, DeVry University and The Iowa Consortium of Community Colleges). I have tutored many college and high school students, as well as grammar school students. I have taught several test preparation classes and helped many students to raise their test scores.
In my experience, the majority of students are highly motivated. This is, for me, the key to success. However, very often, students require assistance with a wide range of ‘remediation’ in many of life’s basic competencies: a skill set that incl ... read more

Preparing Students to Achieve Academic and Personal Success

I conduct a needs assessment for each of my students; and tailor my tutoring program accordingly. I establish an agenda, and provide the necessary instruction. My sessions are interactive so students are expected to participate in the session in order to reinforce subject concepts. Homework consists of readings, completion of subject-matter exercises, and oral presentations to establish confidence in public speaking.

My comments on tutoring World History : History Major in college

I began teaching at eighteen. I’d just graduated high school and wasn’t ready for college, so I worked as a personal trainer at a gym within jogging distance of my house. I worked with clients one-on-one helping structure their workouts to their needs, and while I may be stretching it to equate teaching with providing pointers on proper form or advising on ways to augment a stagnant routine, but I think that gap year spent in the gym was when my proclivity for teaching first became incipient. Since then I’ve taught countless subjects. I’ve worked with second graders and sophomores in college. The classroom may have changed since I was eighteen but that aim to educate another remains. I am currently an MFA in Creative Writing candidate at Rosemont College. The program has two primary focuses for its graduate students. One is for students to enhance their craft and make the most ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Education: Montclair State University BA - Art History BA - General Humanities Minor - Art History Other - Sigma Alpha Lambda Honors Society I am a museum educator and professional writer. Museum Education: I began volunteering with a local museum in the fourth grade and have continued ever since. I have always preferred working in living history museums as opposed to the big, dusty museums with everything behind glass beside little plaques that are too wordy even for industry professionals to find interesting. I've had many wonderful experiences portraying real individuals as well as no-name individuals from the Revolutionary War all the way up through the first half of the 20th century. Real, tangible history is what I always aim for - I can cook on a wood burning stove and know the basics of pre-industrialized farming, just to name a few things. Writing: I ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe teaching others a skill or new information is a gift, to both myself and the student. When the light goes off in their head, and the "I got it!" look comes across their face, I feel a sense of accomplishment. I am very patient, and understand that each student learns at their own speed. Additionally, I know that each student is different, which will sometimes require a new teaching technique. I believe everyone can learn; sometimes it just takes the right teacher for the right student.
I was a teaching assistant for three of my four years at the University of Delaware. I taught courses, as well as tutored students and graded exams. Additionally, I have a great deal of experience in sciences and english, specifically biology and microbiology, as well as excellent grammar skills.

The most important part of teaching is to make content relevant to the student by using a student-centered approach that takes the student's skills, knowledge, and experience into consideration, and using that information to engage the student in the content area. My goal as a teacher is to help my students make these connections, to contextualize content areas and create deeper understandings. All students bring different skills, knowledge, and abilities to the classroom, so it's important for me to cater my approach to the characteristics of each student. In order to achieve this, I strive to develop a dialectical and trusting relationship with each student I encounter, and to get to know them both as learners and as people.

I am passionate about learning and education. As a native of Princeton, NJ, I have tutored Princeton students in English for almost 20 years. I have also tutored in Spanish (in which I hold a BA) and French (I resided in France for 3 years). I have a wide variety of business skills, and hold a Master's degree in International Business. I like to adapt my style to the student's personality and learning style. Some students learn best through visual methods, some auditory and some prefer experiential learning. While textbooks often provide a good foundation, I like to use "real world" teaching if possible. For example, I might have a student act out a situation (renting a car, for example) that he or she may encounter in real l ... read more
