It is important for me to determine what motivates each student to learn, what their interests are and what is important to them. I wanted the student to see how each lesson was valuable to their future success. I always got my students involved in the classroom with open discussions. Each week my students gave a five minute presentation on a subject of their choise, building their self confidence along with their reading, writing and speaking skills.
After twenty years in the financial area I went back to school to obtain a special education credential and found a passion for teaching. I base my teaching on Vygotsky's theory of the Zone of Proximal Development. This theory states that a student can reach a higher level of learning through following the adult's model/example. As the student learns higher level skills, adult guidance is slowly phased out in order to achieve independent functioning.
