MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY Let me start by saying that in my family we have a lot of teachers, so it runs in my blood?. I teach Economics and Business classes. I have been teaching for the past 13 years so I have plenty of experience. I meet 40 new students a month. I taught for several universities online and on campus. Economics, my favorite course to teach is viewed by many as boring; there are right and wrong ways to approach questions, and finite answers to many questions. Of course, it is ... read more

I am just as comfortable tutoring students in math and science as in reading and writing. As a secondary school student, I received a number of top science honors, such as first place honors in several state science fairs and being named a semi-finalist in the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search. Since high school, my interests have leaned more to the arts and writing. I graduated with a BA with distinction in Art History from Yale University and a PhD in the same subject from the University of Manchester, UK. Overall, I have ten years of experience helping students sharpen their skills in reading and writing and tutoring students in subjects as diverse as drama, art history, general/advanced math and science, and English.

I believe that students will be more inclined to pay attention and remember if they are having fun. I try to put some fun in everything I teach. I have designed many games and activities that make the job of learning easier.
At a Wall Street bank, I trained new hires in the proper transmission of Telex and SWIFT messages. I later moved to SR&D as a Programmer Analyst. I worked in the creation and maintenance of programs needed by the bank. For 12 years, I recruited and trained independent salespeople, while conducting my own demonstrations. My income averaged upwards of $50k annually. From 1998 to 2008, I worked in an overnight freight setting as a supervisor where I was responsible for orientation and training of new hires. I reported extensively via email, spreadsheets, and on the ASR 400 system. Currently, I am in the Educator Preparation Institute where I am in the l ... read more

For the past four years, I have spent much of my teaching career working with ESE children and those from low income backgrounds with significant learning barriers. I have been incredibly successful in making learning gains and working toward successful high school completion and college enrollment. I have also tutored students after school and during the summer for the past four years in all core subject areas.
My style is very unlike most educators, but that is why I believe I have such a high success rate. I believe that each student should have fair and equal educational access and that each child has the ability to learn. I believe in having the highest expectations for EVERY student. I also believe in making sure that curriculum and lessons are relevant to the child's surroundings, and I practice the strategies of modeling and practicing the concepts or assignments with the s ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching philosophy is modeled on learning-centered and social constructivist theories. I take an Aristotelian approach in the classroom, guiding students both by lecturing and asking questions. I encourage students to ask each other questions and connect their education to the “bigger picture,” or the world outside the classroom. I believe in collaborative learning practices with mixed- and new-media informing student learning. As a tutor, I listen attentively to students and parents about individual learning concerns, find where learning weaknesses lie, and attempt to find a learning avenue more suitable for the individual learner. In a one-on-one setting, I tailor curriculum based on student level, interest, and attitude. More importantly, I believe learning should be fun and engaging; therefore, I try to engage students every moment to make the lessons easier to absorb and unders ... read more

I believe that all students are different and will excel in academics by exposure to a variety of teaching techniques and strategies. As a result, I have made it my top priority to learn new and innovative teaching methods that will allow me to individualize my instruction for each student. A Little Bit About Me...

The joy of teaching has permeated my professional career, whether as Director of Education at three churches, the editor of a curriculum line, a substitute teacher filling in at the last minute, a well-traveled seminar/workshop leader, a freelance writer of curriculum and classroom tools; the volunteer facilitator of an ongoing weekly class, or most recently, as an educator at a small academy, teaching Creative Writing, Journalism and Latin in an impoverished area of Orlando. I have enjoyed investing my teaching gifts in students ranging from preschool to those in assisted living facilities. My enthusiasm for learning has taken me from English labs in Caracas, Venezuela, to Upward Bound Camps in rural Virginia.
It has been my experience that every child can learn when taught with enthusiasm, care, and creativity. I attempt to lead students in discovering for themselves, as opposed ... read more

As a seasoned instructor in the Humanities I have a long and vast experience teaching at different levels: secondary school, college or university. My teaching has taken place in a wide variety of settings: from a traditional scholarly environment to courses of cultural understanding for the US Marine Corps. Geographically speaking my teaching experience is also rather vast; having taught in Western Europe, North- and East Africa and the USA.
My teaching style is interactive and based upon understanding, instead of mere repetition of the matter taught. I always put the subjects in their broadest context possible, historical, cultural or other.

A Little Bit About Me...

Currently, I am a 7th Grade Social Studies teacher at an inner city school in Orlando. My perspective on the subject of education is unique due to my experiences in my first profession: television and communications. I was a news editor during Operation Iraqi Freedom and I had a unique look at file footage from both sides of the war. I learned first hand that every story has two sides. I bring this to my philosophy of education. I have excellent communication skills, and my research, grammar, and writing skills have been greatly improved by my documentary film production background. I have tutored my peers as a student, I taught adults how to read as a literacy volunteer in college, and now, professionally, I work with middle school students helping them to facilitate the skills necessary to succeed with their academic goals.

I enjoy tutoring because I believe that every child could benefit from one-on-one instruction. Since every child learns differently, it is difficult to reach every child in the regular classroom setting. When I tutor, I figure out what type of learner the student is and I work with him/her to find the best method of learning for them. Academic success is not only determined by intellectual ability, but also the ability to produce quality work in a timely fashion. With the help of a tutor, a child can reach their full potential.
Throughout my academic career, I have had a myriad of success. I have consistently achieved high grades in every subject throughout school and have received many awards. I graduated from Wellesley College with a degree in Classical Civilization and Art History, but I excelled in several subjects, such as biological sciences and English. I am a passionate teacher and I take a true pleasure in transferring my knowledge to students in a way they can understand and remember. I am also a big promoter of “creative teaching”. I believe every child has the capacity to learn and understand if creativity is involved at different levels of the learning process. As an educator, my ultimate goal is to positively impact the lives of children I have had the privilege to work with.

I began to realize my passion for teaching in high school when I started my own tutoring business. After studying English in college, I naturally wanted to use my understanding to help students grow in their abilities and confidence. For the past 20 years, I have been engrossed in teaching--at my church in the children's classes, at home as I home-schooled my three sons, and in school settings in various subjects. During the last four years, I have been teaching students in Latin, Language Arts, History, Mathematics and Bible.
I believe my strong communication skills and high energy come together to make me an effective tutor. My style of teaching is highly-interactive as I value the student practicing and demonstrating his growing understanding of the subject matter. I focus on creatively explaining material so that students can experience success.

I began tutoring math for Stetson University which ranged from Algebra 1 to Calculus 2. I then began tutoring privately and I have tutored lower level math and advanced statistics. I have tutored a student who was failing calculus in class but then they earned the highest possible grade on the standardized test. I also have a degree in mathematics.
My teaching style involves a lot of examples and having the student answer the questions on the board. I am able to come up with examples off the top of my head and have the student work through the problem to prevent "dumb" mistakes (such as forgetting a minus sign). I am very patient and allow my students as much time as possible and encourage them to ask whenever they are stuck. I try to show that math can be fun and interesting and that there are applications out in the real world.
