A Little Bit About Me...

I completed my BS degree in electrical engineering in 2007. While pursing that degree, I took coursework in Math (through Calc I-III, Differential Equations, and Linear Systems Analysis) Physics, and Chemistry. Following graduation I worked as a project engineer constructing and commissioning an oil refinery in southwest Asia. Among with my technical responsibilities, I participated in training future local operators via translator.
To begin, I have always loved science and working with numbers. I'm very patient when trying to explain a topic to someone. I believe the majority of problems with comprehension people have, especially in math/science, are due to an incomplete background or an unclear explanation. With time and effort, most anyone can learn just about anything, and participating in that is very satisfying.

A Little Bit About Me...

Most of my adult life has been spent in the arena of teaching and mentoring. My undergraduate degree, a B.S. in Biology, was largely a platform for the many other courses taken in order to teach mathematics and sciences more effectively. Even after I had moved professionally from teaching to military chaplaincy, much of my focus has been on mentoring others. My range of personal experience is wide, having taught or tutored the range from basic mathematics to differential equations, earth science to physics, with Latin and Greek tossed in for good measure.
I have a teaching style which refer to as "narrative." All memorable education takes place in the context of its history and personal usefulness. Therefore, I show the student how a topic has affected people in the past and pull it into personal relevance. Discussion is crucial, not only for allowing the student to ask questions, ... read more

In early 2006 I decided to give back to the community and entered the teaching profession in the public sector. In 2009 I became a Professionally Certified Teacher who takes responsibility for establishing a positive classroom climate and recognizes the importance of peer relationships in establishing a climate of learning. I became a mature, seasoned professional who exhibits behaviors that show a commitment to planning, reflection, assessment, and learning as an on-going process, who displays thoughtful, effective verbal and nonverbal communication and responsive listening, and who respects the teaching profession by maintaining a professional demeanor in dress, punctuality and speech.
My efforts have resulted in three achievements that continue to directly benefit my students. (1) I maintained classroom decorum by assigning classroom positions of responsibility. (2) I introd ... read more

I believe that every student learns differently, and I work hard to adapt my teaching style to each individual student and subject. Through examples, modeling, and asking the student questions, I hope to guide students to be able to eventually working out difficult concepts on their own. This can help increase a student's self-esteem, which I believe should always be a key goal of teaching. I try to impart the passion I have for learning (especially in the sciences) to all my students, and I try to counteract the frustration towards school and learning that can be felt by struggling students.

I develop a relationship with my students to eliminate any anxiety that they may feel about science, specifically chemistry. I make it relevant to their life and their expectations, breaking it down and giving real life applications. I expect a lot from my students, but I give them the tools that they need to meet those expectations and build up their self confidence and apply what they have learned.

As a Studio Art major I was exposed to a lot of Art History. My interest in Art History led me to earn a minor in it. My study in Art History has allowed me to become a proficient writer due to the many papers that I wrote on past and modern artist and their works. Not only am I creative with paint and the written word, but, I am a student also. To explain, currently I am working towards earning a masters degree as a physician assistant; through this I have learned a lot in the areas of science--biology, chemistry, and anatomy and physiology-- as well as math (algebra and statistics). My educational background has allowed me to tutor students in both math and english subjects

My best skill is Math, I have always been proficient at it. As an Engineer, I have had the opportunity to learn more and take advantage of this skill, and I want to share it, I love teaching. I am also a member of MENSA. I have been tutoring children and adults since 1999, teaching Math, Physics & Spanish. I was also a Math teacher in a High School in Venezuela, for the PAA (SAT Equivalent).
I believe I have a good mental connection with children. Teaching Math is not just about solving problems, using specific methods, equations & formulas that the student has to memorize, and then will forget after a couple days. It's about understanding the problems, it's about knowing where the problem is, and how to solve it using basic Math knowledge and some axioms, step by step, even reinventing the answer, if possible. Teaching Spanish is a lot different, its more methodical, I use some m ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a teacher/professor and Dean of a University for 15 years. I got my BS in Life Sciences and one year of MS in Molecular Genetics. I continued on to get my MBA. I have taught English, Math, Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology, Business courses and other science courses.
There are so many different teaching styles and learning styles. As a tutor the teaching style is going to be dependent on the student's learning style. Not everyone can teach. As a Dean, I had to interview many potential instructors. I believe that a teacher needs to be caring, compassionate and encourage students at all times. I have these qualities and my students can vouch for that.

I am a chemical engineer by profession and in the teaching field. I was a substitute teacher and tutor for 1 yr, then a high school teacher handling chemistry and general science for another year before i became a college instructor handling chemistry, physics and math for 15 yrs. Being a sales representative and at the same time the manager/cashier of a family business before my teaching career, I would say I have best people skills and can handle people of different levels and ages. I love teaching because it is a very challenging and fulfilling job, especially the joy when any of my former students will remember me as an effective, understanding and funny mentor from whom they learned a lot of things.

I just graduated about eight months ago with a B.S. in Biomedical Science from USF. I plan on going to medical school in 2010 and I am currently studying for my MCAT. Studying for this exam has helped me to gain both a further understanding of the sciences from my undergraduate studies (chemistry, biology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy/physiology, etc.) as well as how the sciences relate to and build off one another. I also am a very skilled writer and avid reader. I have extensive writing experience in both general writing (i.e. for English class) and scientific writing (i.e. lab reports and abstracts) styles. I have tutored children between the ages of 5-12 as part of an afterschool program and I have participated in many peer writing review programs at both the University of Miami and University of South Florida.
