A Little Bit About Me...

I am a seasoned adjunct instructor and tutor at the introductory level at a Community College. I have taught a graduate level Chemistry course at a Masters granting College. My education includes a M.S. Polymer Chemistry/Science, B.S. in Biology and 46 Credits of Chemistry . More importantly I have worked as a teaching assistant at a School for Autistic children. Through this experience and others I developed a high level of patient and understanding of the different styles of learning and the broad spectrum of speed for which children master concept.
I am a firm believer that strict memorization does not allow the student to broaden their ability to solve problems of various flavors. I encourage the student to understand the concepts to avoid tedious memorization. Additionally I believe children learn best in an environment where they do not feel intimidated or ... read more

I have master’s degrees in Mathematics and Statistics with related work in Physics and Astronomy. My 20 years in education includes teaching at various colleges and high schools providing instruction in Statistics, Physics, Calculus and College Algebra. One of my more gratifying experiences was as a Learning Center Instructor working one-on-one with students in a wide variety of subjects. More recently, I worked with a middle school girl who had been bored and ranked as mediocre in public school, but was actually a child prodigy in need of more challenging material!
In my disciplines, the value of understanding totally outweighs rote memorization and learning of “recipes” for solving problems. I believe students understand new concepts in terms of their previous experience and background. I attempt to link previous experience to new experience and promote meaningful learning. My goal is to provide the best educational experience for my students. I truly enjoy working with young people and helping them learn. I believe that all children can learn regardless of abilities and backgrounds when provided with the appropriate learning environment. I also believe that each child is unique and has different styles of learning, and how these students learn should be incorporated as part of their learning experience to help these students reach their academic potential. I am a strong believer in the constructivist approach to learning and will use this approach whenever appropriate to assist students in their learning experiences.
I recently obtained my MA degree in education and also hold a BS degree in Exercise Science. I am certified to teach grades Kindergarten through eighth grade in the states of Tennessee and North Carolina. I am certified to teach language ... read more

My teaching style can be called old-fashioned: the best results come from patient, focused, disciplined time on task. To learn math one must work a variety of problems, and practice them diligently. My strength as a tutor is my ability to explain the algorithms in a way that students can easily grasp. This includes the vitally important requirement of why the problem is worked the way it is, not simply how.
I taught high-school math for 14 years, everything from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, in both public and private schools. I also have extensive writing experience, including for many newspapers, and am currently teaching Political Science at the Community-College level. Thus, I could tutor math, and/or any subject or assignment that required verbal and writing skills. I tutored UTK athletes in math and philosophy, and proctored Pre-Calculus at UTK as well.

More About This Tutor...

What I have learned in my tutoring experience is that every individual has their own learning style - thus, I work with those tutored to find what means works best for them, and stress conceptual understanding over rote memorization. Teaching is not unidirectional: indeed, it is one of the best ways to cement for oneself the information being given. My goal is to give anyone whom I tutor, the ability that Einstein found truly valuable: "You do not truly understand something unless you can explain it to your grandmother." Suffice it to say that I train people to be able to educate their grandmothers.
I have had extensive and varied work experience in both field and laboratory-based biology: I have worked as both an environmental and zoological researcher, and in the fields of genetics, microbiology and botany. My bachelor's degree in biology has focused primarily on organismal and e ... read more
