I have master’s degrees in Mathematics and Statistics with related work in Physics and Astronomy. My 20 years in education includes teaching at various colleges and high schools providing instruction in Statistics, Physics, Calculus and College Algebra. One of my more gratifying experiences was as a Learning Center Instructor working one-on-one with students in a wide variety of subjects. More recently, I worked with a middle school girl who had been bored and ranked as mediocre in public school, but was actually a child prodigy in need of more challenging material!
In my disciplines, the value of understanding totally outweighs rote memorization and learning of “recipes” for solving problems. I believe students understand new concepts in terms of their previous experience and background. I attempt to link previous experience to new experience and promote meaningful learning. I taught high-school math for 14 years, everything from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, in both public and private schools. I also have extensive writing experience, including for many newspapers, and am currently teaching Political Science at the Community-College level. Thus, I could tutor math, and/or any subject or assignment that required verbal and writing skills. I tutored UTK athletes in math and philosophy, and proctored Pre-Calculus at UTK as well.
My teaching style can be called old-fashioned: the best results come from patient, focused, disciplined time on task. To learn math one must work a variety of problems, and practice them diligently. My strength as a tutor is my ability to explain the algorithms in a way that students can easily grasp. This includes the vitally important requirement of why the problem is worked the way it is, not simply how.

I have had extensive and varied work experience in both field and laboratory-based biology: I have worked as both an environmental and zoological researcher, and in the fields of genetics, microbiology and botany. My bachelor's degree in biology has focused primarily on organismal and environmental sciences, but I am well-versed in a suite of other subjects, not only among the life sciences. Copious writing assignments during my college career, along with regular consultation of published scientific literature, has versed me in the understanding of research approaches, along with a knowledge of the standards expected in any scientific endeavor. Beyond this, I simply love science, and enjoy passing along this enthusiasm to others.
What I have learned in my tutoring experience is that every individual has their own learning style - thus, I work with those tutored to find what means ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe learning is about confidence. I have seen numerous students doing poorly in courses because they were convinced that they were not capable of learning the subject matter. Small successes help to build confidence in order to move on to the subsequent challenges. I believe in starting with the basics, and making sure that the students truly grasps the subject matter before moving to more difficult concepts. Often, it takes several different approaches before a student is able to understand the concept. I believe that with patience, I can find the right approach and help most students perform at a higher level.
While completing my undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering at University of Idaho, I was often called upon to tutor people within the building where I lived during college. I also was employed by the University to grade papers and offer assistance to under ... read more
