I began tutoring as a volunteer with the America Reads program in high school. I continued volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club during college. After an opportunity to assist a professor in administering a freshman course, I applied to teach high school in Pasco County. I taught world history and psychology for one year before returning to school for my Master of Arts degree in History. I continued tutoring on the side, but spent most of my time assisting professors in the Department of History at Winthrop University as a Graduate Assistant where I edited exams and papers for undergraduate students. I have always had a passion for education and learning. I have always excelled in mathematics from elementary to collegiate levels. I LOVE math. I love to do math and I love to teach math. I was even on a math competition team in middle school. I have a strong statistical background from my Psychology studies and have taught Middle Grades Math to 8th graders. While attending Claflin University in the pursuit of obtaining duel BA's in the field of journalism and sociology, my off times was spent in the middle schools of Orangeburg, SC for nearly six years. I spent 4-5 hours in the classroom (daily) as an assistant and tutor/mentor in language arts classes grades 6-8. My majoring in sociology allows me to use human behavioral knowledge to reach kids effectively in order to sustain their focus which allows them to embrace the concept of learning. I have extensive grammatical skills due to I have worked as a journalist for a daily newspaper and written several research papers that has been published in respected journals. As a tutor/mentor, I have also worked with two youth organizations during the summer months for over five years. My tutoring skills cover the subjects of English, Science, and History. I feel as though I am highly qualified and competitive for a teaching position because of my abilities to relate to children of all ages. As a volunteer basketball referee at Northside Baptist Church, Upward basketball program since 1998, I work with children between the ages of 7 and 13. I teach them about basketball and sportsmanship. As a parent of a 17 year old son, I constantly mentor him and his friends on life, school and everything in between.
