I have worked as an English, Math, and Science tutor at both the undergraduate and graduate level for the past 7 years. Within that time, I have tutored countless students that have shown noticeable improvement in their test scores and their understanding of class material. As an undergraduate at Victor Valley College, I was part of the Model United Nations program, the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and the Writing Center. I currently work as a tutor at CSU San Bernardino, where I assist students with writing assignments from a wide variety of disciplines. As a senior/graduate level pre-medical biology major, I am highly experienced with topics ranging from Cellular Respiration to Neuroscience. I enjoy seeing children discover the world around them in their own ways. Therefore, I teach the importance of working things out until you understand it for yourself. Children will meet and often surpass any goal that is given to them if you show that you believe in them. I use a hands-on approach, as much as possible, with a problem-solving emphasis. I am a working, free-lance flutist here in LA. I have my BM degree in flute performance from CSUN, and have been playing for 28 years. I have always been the top or one of the top players in all venues I have played for. I currently play for many orchestras in southern california. I have been teaching all levels of flute for 20 years now. I also teach beginning to intermediate piano. Over a span of nearly 30 years, I have studied with some amazing flutists/teachers, and learned some wonderful teaching techniques.
The student's needs come first, so I always teach based on their long-term goals. Learning music should be fun, so I encourage this while pushing student's to be the best. It truly depends on the student and the subject. I try to adapt my teaching style to what the student needs. If one approach is not working, then we can work together to find an approach that does. I believe that it is important for the student to be able to relate to the teacher and it is the teachers job to create that connection.
Over the past 15 years I have had variety of different teaching experiences. I taught literature as a TA at UC Santa Barbara while studying for my Masters. I have tutored K-12 students in both Math and English. While studying for my undergraduate I assited in running a homeless shelter where I taught many of the children reading, writing, and math. I have a passion for teaching and am a mother myself and understand the true value of educating our youth.
