When considering my teaching style, it is difficult to explain a single process for teaching. When working with different people it is important to remain creative, inventive, and patient. Every person has different learning styles and it is important to recognize in that person what helps them understand more fully. Whether it is diagram and pictures, breaking a complex problem into many simple parts, comparing similar examples that are familiar to the person, or simply taking the time to make sure that the child feels comfortable saying "I don't know". All of these are useful tools, but in my opinion by far the most important is patience. Remaining patient when someone doesn't understand is the absolute most important thing. Every student learns in different ways and at different rates. I take cues from the student to determine which explanations work and which don’t. When teaching my children to read, the methods that were effective with my son were bewildering to my daughter. I tried other techniques until I found the right one for her. The same held true with math. The key is following the student’s lead. Keep trying tactics until the understanding is evident.
