A Little Bit About Me...

I have a passion for helping people, and nothing satifies me more than helping a person understand a concept and succeed in his or her class. I teach using a lot of examples and incorporating the concepts into the example problems so that the student can see how the examples are based on the concepts. I strive to know the students well so they don't just see me as a tutor but also as a friend who is easily approachable with questions.
I worked for over 2 years as a study session leader for various engineering courses while getting my B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. I also tutored several students in engineering classes at the college level. I have experience working with elementary through high school students as well.

My goal is to be constantly building confidence in a student's abilities. I am very patient and allow the student to advance at their own pace. I enjoy being the muse that can show the student the skills they may already have but never had the knowledge to express it. I can show that learning reading and writing can be fun and not boring. I am a very supportive person and believe that everyone can learn and be inspired to want to learn more. My goal is make a student feel more confident in themselves through the power of knowledge in vocabulary.
My experience includes earning a bachelor's degree in liberal arts and a master's degree in psychology. I worked as a family therapist for seven years with a wide variety of clients including senior counseling, family counseling and grief counseling. I first started teaching in 2003 as a substitute to supplement the income from my guiding business during the slower portion of the year. After showing that I was very capable in the classroom and could quickly develop a strong rapport with coworkers and students, I was hired for the year when another teacher left unexpectedly. I went to school for the next year at the University of Kentucky, did not finish my degree, but earned enough credits to be hired by to teach in their Alternative School. I taught and was a leader and innovator at Cropper Alternative School for the next five years, until I decided to move to this part of the country after a recent divorce.
