As an undergraduate, my focus for studies in English were both Critical Literary Analysis and Creative Writing. Analytical writing was stressed heavily, giving me the ability to interpret a text based on intrinsic value. The creative tract allowed me to experiment with my own abilities while keeping in mind strategies implemented by others I have read and studied. A requirement for all English majors at the university was to have intermediate skills in a foreign language. I have taken four semesters of Spanish at the college level with additional language labs. Spanish was also my foreign language of choice throughout secondary school and I have had first hand practice from my work in Guatemala. I have been teaching children of all ages for over 25 years. My primary expertise has been in music education. I have been employed in public, private and parochial schools throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Not only have I created traditional lessons for children in the classroom, but I have also gained experience as a musician, performing in a variety of ensembles, bands and musical productions. My approach to teaching is to first make a general assessment of the student's skill level and having the student play what he or she is comfortable with on their instrument. I try to make sure that a student is getting comfortable with the music they are learning before leaving the lesson by breaking down the subject matter and going over it a few times. I also encourage students to bring in music that they like to listen to and would like to learn how to play to keep them motivated. I don't believe that there is one way to teach everyone and so my approach from one student to the next may vary. Overall, I try to keep lessons personal because after all, learning music is for the student's enjoyment.
