American History is one of my top subjects!

I am a high school senior in the AP/Honors program at Warner Robins High School. I have two little sisters who I have tutored since they began school. On average, they have scored higher on tests when I have helped, particularly in the area of social studies. I have also helped multiple students at my school. The average that they score on a test is typically ten points higher than when they study by themselves and, in some cases, twenty points if the student does not study at all. The results are typically better in social studies, the subject which I am most proficient in, but all subjects tend to shoe significant improvement.
I am hands on. I personally learn best from things like powerpoints and handouts. This is also the way I tend to teach others.

More About This Tutor...

During the last 10 years I have worked with all levels of students, preschool through college levels. These areas include reading, math, english, psychology, science and social studies. I am a self starter and have worked with parents when I owned/operated my private daycare. I have since then worked with children in low poverty communities in Atlanta Georgia, in order to provide an alternative method to learning to ensure that children receive the appropriate level of understanding of various subjects.
What I have learned working with students is that many do not learn in the same manner. I beleive in what is called top process learning. Given the student a concept and allowing them to explore the possibilities of how one arrives at such a concept has allowed deeper critical thinking and strategic planning. However, this method is not predominately taught in Georgia education ... read more

I have always had an avid love of learning. I attempt to make my students love it too. I try to incorporate things the students like into the lessons (for example, I used football scoring to explain mathematic concepts to a 10 year old boy). I also am a firm believer that mistakes are part of the learning process; if you are able to see where you went wrong and fix it, you have succeeded in understanding the material.
All throughout my school years, I was a highly motivated student. I was in the accelerated programs from first grade to my senior year in high school. During high school I was not only in the accelerated english program, I also took many Advanced Placement classes and was on the accelerated math track. I was even able to finish my bachelor degree in International Affairs in three years. During my senior year in high school, I tutored my student in all of his subjects ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

With my collegiate experience, I have taught as a ESL assistant at school; helped special needs college students through reading and producing Books-on-Tape; and served as an ESL tutor for Inlingua. Indeed I have developed and perfected my communication and writing skills from writing research papers, laboratory reports, essays and public presentations of my work.
Teaching is my passion and I highly enjoying working and educating others. I believe that teaching should be implemented with enthusiasm, love, passion and innovation. A child should be given the best learning environment that will facilitate exploration, independence and growth. Thus the child will develop a natural desire and motivation to learn with and without the presence of a teacher. My teaching style is that of a facilitator and demonstrator.

It is my belief that I do not truly master subjects until I can teach it to others. Thus, I view tutoring as an essential component of the learning process. With respect to my tenure as a tutor in the community of Tuskegee, Alabama and on-campus,this has certainly been the case. From helping to ease students of their confusion in the laboratory, to leading review sessions in front of spacious lecture halls, my experiences as a tutor have augmented my interpersonal as well as technical skills. The responsibilities inherent to tutoring have motivated me to enhance my knowledge, question my preconceptions, and strengthen my understanding of intergrated sciences and reading material.
Tutoring has taught me that perseverance and patience are the keys to tackling tough situations, and I try to pass that along to others. I am very versatile when it comes to teaching various age groups. I ... read more

It is much easier to learn, if you know the instructor is working with you and for you. I think if the person is in a relaxed atmosphere and they know they are moving forward toward their goal, they will feel the rewards of their efforts. It is easier to learn when the instructor and the child are working for the same goals.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management and a minor in Psychology. I have had several years of experience working with the public. I've learned a great deal of patience over the years and have been told by my students that I explain things clearly and calmly. They've also mentioned in evaluations that I'm compassionate to student needs and generous with practical advice they can use. I've tutored students with behavioral problems and students for whom English was their second language. I'm familiar with the types of assistance these students need. Also, because I work with a variety of traditional and non-traditional students at Macon State, I am aware of the specific challenges facing students with jobs and families.

As an educator, I recognize the importance of teaching and the impact that it has on the lives of students. My goal as an educator is to enhance student learning and to maximize individual learning potential as much as possible. Teaching young people involves an understanding of the student, what they value and a desire to help them gain the ability to learn in a way that they can respect and embrace. Events must be explained in the context in which they occured. The points of view of all parties must be respected even when they are faulty. Children must be taught why and not just what...
