Experienced Math & Science Tutor

I believe that all children should have the opportunity to learn in a way that is best for them. Every person is different, and that includes the methods they use to learn. I know that the best way to really gain knowledge of something is to have it presented in a manner that is best suited to the individual. Because of that, I am committed to teaching with the individual in mind.
After college graduation, I taught Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry, Earth Science, Biology and Chemistry for one year at a private school in Fresno, CA. I then moved to San Jose, CA and taught at Valley Christian High School. I taught Algebra and Algebra II for one year and then taught Biology and Honors Biology for two years. I also taught Algebra in summer school to students that required more of a smaller, one on one environment to learn. During this time, I earned my California teaching certifica ... read more

I have many years of professional experience as an engineer and computer programmer which involved much practical application of mathematical principles. I have worked as a substitue teacher for about 5 years and I have taken about 30 semester hours of math education courses at UNCW. I have taken 18 hours of graduate courses in math and I am qualified to teach math at the community college level. I am currently publishing a math paper in a well respected journal. I have tutored a number of students ranging from middle school to calculus at the college level.
I have learned from math education courses to pose problems that are just beyond the level of the student so that they stretch their mind. I use a constuctivism approach where the student builds on what they know to find solutions to current problems. This is how they learn new ideas. I also will approach a problem from differe ... read more

My personal approach to teaching varies between student and student, situation and situation. Generally, I make sure I understand the specific lesson the student has to learn, and then ask them building block questions to make them come up with the answer. This is similar to AVID training, where the answers have to come from questioning each other. If technology is around, I prefer to also use that to explain the problems.
At North Carolina State University, I was a teacher assistant for two years, explaining to the students how computers and intel assembly work. After I received my Bachelors, I was in University of North Carolina -- Wilmington's Watson School Program for a little over one semester, gaining field experiences in both becoming a teacher and a tutor. The different sets of experiences should prove valuable to me.

My favorite part about teaching is the moment that something "clicks" within a child's mind. I am a problem solver naturally so I try to lead children down a path of discovery instead of just teaching the answer. I believe this helps children gain an understanding of how things work or why they are a certain way so that they are able to apply these same processes to other problems.
I have earned two bachelor degrees, BS in Business Administration with a concentration in International Business and BA in Spanish. I have 10 years of professional experience involving customer service, Spanish translation, tutoring, and training. As an ex-patriate, I was afforded the opportunity to learn Spanish fluently and have witnessed first hand its importance in business and life today. I also have elementary age children that I assist in the everyday learning processes.

Coming to this country and be able to go to school is very important for me, and i found it very difficult seeing many children not able to go to school because they have not motivation, even if they have the opportunity to go to school and be what they want.I believe education is very import in the 21st century and everybody should go to school and learning new experience and explore the different opportunity available for them, so i would like to help students learn about the value of education and help them gain the knowledge they need to have a bright future.

I have experience working with a wide range of students from students with special needs to gifted students and everyone in between! While teaching, I have tutored high school biology, AP biology, algebra, algebra 2, and geometry students.

I have recently graduated from UNCW with a BS degree in chemistry. I have taken mainly math and science classes for the past three years. I have participated in many study groups and helped many other students who were in math and science classes by tutoring them.
I like to work through each type of problem step by step creating a blue print of what the student should be doing to solve each type of problem. I then repeat this with another problem of the same type. I like to go through every type of problem like this while they write the steps of how to do the problem down and then try to solve each problem step by step. I like to emphasize that they write neatly so they can see clearly what they are doing and what they have done so they can quickly go back through the problem and check for mistakes.
