I have learned from math education courses to pose problems that are just beyond the level of the student so that they stretch their mind. I use a constuctivism approach where the student builds on what they know to find solutions to current problems. This is how they learn new ideas. I also will approach a problem from different angles to reinforce ideas. I have math books and a lap top computer with a wireless Internet connection to assist in tackling new ideas. My personal approach to teaching varies between student and student, situation and situation. Generally, I make sure I understand the specific lesson the student has to learn, and then ask them building block questions to make them come up with the answer. This is similar to AVID training, where the answers have to come from questioning each other. If technology is around, I prefer to also use that to explain the problems. At North Carolina State University, I was a teacher assistant for two years, explaining to the students how computers and intel assembly work. My favorite part about teaching is the moment that something "clicks" within a child's mind. During my time at NC State, I worked at the mathematics laboratory for two years. In that short amount of time, I learned as much as I taught. The experience of communicating technical information in a way that is accessible requires a set of skills that, in my humble opinion, will always be in demand. In mathematics, I was taught early on that in order to prove something you need three things: 1. facts that are obvious/self-evident 2. relate them in a logical way 3. frame these facts and their relationships inside of a theory Engineering is just applied mathematics.
