My comments on tutoring Sign Language : I am fluent in sign language I learned in school and I also had the opportuinty to experience it hands on with a spouse who has been deaf since birth.

I am fluent in sign laguage, I am in school now, so I am not certified yet but I can teach what is and or has been taught to me. I also have a spouse that is deaf and has taught me alot as well so I have hands on experience as well. I eager to teach what I have learned , simple do to the fact that I am a strong believer that the world should show more interest in other languages than there own, I choose this because, watched how my spouse struggled to be understood when we went out. And I wanted to change the way people looked at his situation, he not disabled I look at him the way I look at the Hispanics that come here and are not understood, now there are more interpreters for them I want to do the same for our deaf community.

The first thing that I try to do is get to know my client, mainly focusing on what they both like and dislike about school. Then we narrow it down even further to the subject that they are having problems in. I ask them what they think the problem is, find out what the school/teacher thinks the problem is (through review of their coursework including past homework and tests) and come up with a solution that will benefit the student, teacher, and parent to improve and fix the situation.

I also believe, based on Gardner's research, that students have multiple intelligences. I have an open style to teaching. I believe that if you show someone the subject; allow them to do the task along with taking notes that they retain most of the information. I also strongly believe that the learning environment needs to be fun and enjoyable. I also give my students small test throughout the class, and then give them an exam at the end. Besides my formal education, I have helped many people while working for Disabled Student Services at Florida Community College at Jacksonville. I helped my blind boss understand the needs of her deaf students. I helped a disabled boy with Algebra and I helped my mom with her math when she went back to college. I enjoy helping younger and older people alike.
