A Little Bit About Me...

Even before I went to college and earned my B.A., I had already taught two years of ESL in Kachin State, Burma. I came back to the US and earned my degree in East Asian Studies at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. A few months after I graduated I went to the People's Republic of China and taught English as a Second Language from 2003 through 2006. In addition, I have completed all coursework for my M.A. in General Education, however, I have not finished the degree which requires student teaching. I am currently employed as a substitute teacher for two local school districts.
My teaching style depends on the needs of the particular students. I assess the style needed for a particular lesson and use visuals, such as PowerPoint presentations, textbooks, as well as audio, with such tools as are available after individual assessments. A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a substitute teacher for about 10 years specializing in math & physics. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering plus 20+ years of maintenance/engineering experience. I incorporate practical examples in teaching to give students in depth knowledge in a practical sense. I gather my examples from my varied career experiences from the Military, Aircraft, Engineering, Manufacturing/Maintenance & Computer fields. I sporadically tutors students in my specialty.
I use the Active Participation strategy because it engages the learner not only in understanding but in contributing as well. This active learning process combined with introduction of practical uses/examples of the the subject matter provides a deeper meaning. I am a patient and encouraging tutor. I observe my students' responses and then provide examples and exercises that will enable them to comprehend the concepts. I prefer, when possible, to explain the "big picture"-in order to activate memory and cognitive abilities that will place concepts and skills in a mental framework.
