PHILOSOPHY The key to education is to love what you do and I love what I do. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing students' progress. As I teach with love and I create a fun environment for students (using games to practice the language), students become involved and interested in the classroom. I have also tutored one-on-one and I prepare a lot of different activities for the class and exercises for the student to be able to practice the language when I'm not there. I encourage watching TV news programs to practice listening comprehension and the use of flash cards in order for the student to memorize some short phrases. I have been teaching Theology for 30 years. I studied at the Opus Dei and at the Argentine Catholic University I have tutoring children and adults for 30 years. I teach Spanish, ESL and basic French. I prepare exercises, activities, flash cards and reading m ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have been attending Northern Illinois University for the past 3 years and so far have had a great experience. I am double majoring in Spanish and geography and have had good success in both subject areas with a cumulative GPA of 3.95. They are both interests of mine and I have definitely improved during my time at NIU. I think I am qualified to share what I've learned with others who need help in either area and really enjoy working with people.
I think teaching style should depend on the student. Some people move at different paces or learn better from listening or from doing the work themselves with supervision and help. I am flexible with any style and once I become familiar with a person it becomes easier to see how they learn best.

In 1993, I entered my career in language acquisition by volunteering as an ESL teacher in the newly freed former Soviet satellite state, Latvia. When I returned to the US in 1994, I began teaching adults ESL in a community college. In 1998, due to my unique combination of skills, I was offered as position as ESL coordinator for this same institution. In 2001, I expanded my professional experience by going to work in educational publishing as a marketing manager, promotions manager, and finally a trainer/presenter and curriculum developer for a literacy development company.
I always try to consider the challenges that each individual student faces when I devise the way I am going to present materials. In terms of tutoring students in literacy/phonics/phonemic awareness, I am a big proponent of sequential and explicit phonics instruction that builds knowledge and competency step by s ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I strive to develop each student's interest in the subject at hand. He or she is far more likely to enjoy learning and retain information this way. I follow a method of individual trial and error supplemented with examples and corrections.
I have recently graduated from the University of Delaware and intend to pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry within the next few years. My major was in Chemistry with a minor in Biochemistry; I also focused on Theatre, Japanese, French, English, and Biology. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is learner-centered, constructivist, and practical. I believe that a teacher must get to know her students on a personal level to facilitate the best learning. By ascertaining a student’s current knowledge and beliefs about a particular subject, I am able to help students advance to their fullest potential. If students understand the applicability of a concept or skill, they are much more likely to be engaged in learning it. Thus, I give students as much “real-world” practice as possible, so they can see the value in the subject they are learning. I am most able to tutor students in all aspects of English and language arts, but I can also tutor in the social sciences like history, psychology, sociology, and geography.
My experience includes teaching college English for three years. The courses I taught (Composition I and II) required me to know the mechanics of En ... read more

I enjoy helping young students reach their potential. I believe that students learn best when subjects are presented in a interactive and fun way. I encourage student feedback and participation by asking questions and providing activities. I try to open student's eyes to things they have never experienced before, whether it be a foreign culture that they have never heard of, or the idea that they truly can succeed.
I have been a Sunday school teacher for a wide range of age. This experience makes me comfortable in many different classroom settings. I also taught basic health lessons to adult women in developing nations such as India and Uganda.
