A Little Bit About Me...

I have been attending Northern Illinois University for the past 3 years and so far have had a great experience. I am double majoring in Spanish and geography and have had good success in both subject areas with a cumulative GPA of 3.95. They are both interests of mine and I have definitely improved during my time at NIU. I think I am qualified to share what I've learned with others who need help in either area and really enjoy working with people.
I think teaching style should depend on the student. Some people move at different paces or learn better from listening or from doing the work themselves with supervision and help. I am flexible with any style and once I become familiar with a person it becomes easier to see how they learn best.

More About This Tutor...

I always try to consider the challenges that each individual student faces when I devise the way I am going to present materials. In terms of tutoring students in literacy/phonics/phonemic awareness, I am a big proponent of sequential and explicit phonics instruction that builds knowledge and competency step by step. My current work as a curriculum consultant for a phonemic awareness company, Reading Horizons, has been most satisfactory as their methodology, in use for many, many decades, uses sound practices based on this teaching philosophy.
In 1993, I entered my career in language acquisition by volunteering as an ESL teacher in the newly freed former Soviet satellite state, Latvia. When I returned to the US in 1994, I began teaching adults ESL in a community college. In 1998, due to my unique combination of skills, I was offered as position as ESL coordinator for this same inst ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have recently graduated from the University of Delaware and intend to pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry within the next few years. My major was in Chemistry with a minor in Biochemistry; I also focused on Theatre, Japanese, French, English, and Biology. I spent two semesters as a Teaching Assistant for General Chemistry and held personal office hours for tutoring regularly. I have worked at a learning center teaching students of all ages. In addition, I tutored various subjects in high school including ESL.
I strive to develop each student's interest in the subject at hand. He or she is far more likely to enjoy learning and retain information this way. I follow a method of individual trial and error supplemented with examples and corrections.

More About This Tutor...

My experience includes teaching college English for three years. The courses I taught (Composition I and II) required me to know the mechanics of English (grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.) as well as various forms of writing (narrative, expository, compare/contrast, cause/effect, research-supported, etc.). I also have experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). For the past several months, I have worked as a substitute teacher for kindergarten through 12th grade. Substituting has given me the experience of teaching all ages and backgrounds in a variety of subjects. In 2007, I graduated with a Master of Science degree in Adult Education. In 2002, I graduated with two degrees: English-Professional Writing and Geography.
My teaching style is learner-centered, constructivist, and practical. I believe that a teacher must get to know her students on a personal level to fa ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy helping young students reach their potential. I believe that students learn best when subjects are presented in a interactive and fun way. I encourage student feedback and participation by asking questions and providing activities. I try to open student's eyes to things they have never experienced before, whether it be a foreign culture that they have never heard of, or the idea that they truly can succeed.
I have been a Sunday school teacher for a wide range of age. This experience makes me comfortable in many different classroom settings. I also taught basic health lessons to adult women in developing nations such as India and Uganda. I have been a substitute teacher for elementary, middle, and high school students in the Arlington Independent School District in Texas. I supervised a grant funded tutoring program for refugee children going to school in the Fort Worth Inde ... read more
