I am currently attending the University of Maine in order to receive my Masters of Arts in Teaching for Secondary Education in Life Science. I am currently certified as and Ed. Tech 3 in the state of Maine and will be receiving my teaching certificate when I graduate in June, 2010. I have worked with children often over the last few years but most recently I have acted as a tutor (for most subjects) for Penobscot County Job Corps in Bangor, Maine and as a student teacher in the Oakland, Maine school system. I provide enough background information on the subject matters first, give a big picture of the subject matters and then break things apart and teach them parts. This methodology has always been effective because students find it easier to learn all the necessary ingredients in order to grasp the big topic. I always make sure students are given enough practice questions on subjects like calculus, physics and chemistry. My experience as a tutor during my school years has taught me that students have hard time on subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Calculus and Biology, not because they didn't have good instructors, but because students were not provided enough background information on various topics. I have always employed a fun-filled curious environment to my students which have helped them come up with more questions and instill passion on the subject matters.

I have experience as an instructor while in the Marine Corps, and during that time I have found that I am really suited to teaching. The idea of giving new knowledge to people of all ages is an exciting one. I have done some substitute teaching at Athens Elementary School. I have found that I get along well with children and that they like me. I have found that children like me and will listen to what I have to say. Improving the lives of children has always been a passion of mine. While my academic background has had a focus, primarily, in the social work realm, my overall philosophy for working with youth emphasizes patience and education. I have sought opportunities working with both young children and adolescents. My interest began when I tutored elementary age children during my high school career. I am currently a Biology Major at the University of Southern Maine. I have completed my degree requirements for my BS, I’m finishing up by taking an additional 9 credits this semester before walking for graduation in the Spring, May 2011. During my four years in college I have taken 11 laboratory courses, providing me with extensive knowledge and experience in writing research papers, lab reports and scientific reviews. I have experience in math, reaching a Calculus level; completion of upper level courses in Chemistry, Statistics, and Physics; a variety of liberal arts courses.
