A Little Bit About Me...

When I traveled to Costa Rica the first time to earn my TEFL certification, I knew that teaching was my vocation. I love teaching, and I have learned from teaching students of all ages how to apply my skills to meet the needs of my students. The most important thing I've learned is that you have to find ways to entertain your students while teaching them at the same time. If you can do this along with truly believing in what you are teaching, you can undoubtedly help and motivate any student.
I began tutoring lower level Spanish students in high school for several years. Later in college, I volunteered for the America Reads Challenge Program and helped elementary-aged students improve their reading skills. Not long after graduating college, I moved to Costa Rica where I taught English for six months to learners between the ages of six and sixty years old. In addition to my tu ... read more

When I am teaching I am very patient and try to organize the lesson or my assistance in steps. I'll have the child read the problem or question, ask what they know about it, see if they understand the question and proceed. The patient style helps me see what the student's strengths and weaknesses are so I know what they need to practice and focus on. If the child has multiple assignments or tasks I have them perform the more difficult ones first. Starting with the easy assignments may seem like it makes sense but I would prefer that the student have more energy for the tasks they'll have more difficulty with.
During my high school years I would volunteer to help children through various charities and church. When I attended college I became an Early Childhood Education major and volunteered in preschool and elementary schools. During my Student Teaching in Des Plaines I was in ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Butler University with highest honors in English Writing and high honors in Spanish. While attending school, I worked as a peer tutor in the Writers' Studio, which trains high-proficiency tutors to work one-on-one with students on the outlining, writing, and revision process for academic essays. I have studied Spanish since 2nd grade and studied abroad in Madrid for a semester during 2009. I have also been studying music and cello performance since 4th grade, played in the Butler Symphony Orchestra all 4 years of college, and tutored several elementary students in cello.
I work best in one-on-one situations with students of most ages, particularly older students. I make sure that the student understands my explanations of topics, and if they do not, I make sure to rephrase coherently so that they do. I actively engage the student in their learning, ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Teaching was never a job for me, but rather a way to practice a passion. I believe that every child possesses the ability to learn and it is the responsibility of educators to cultivate such talent and foster growth. I believe in helping students reach their potential by teaching them to pose and answer questions about the world around them. My classroom was a place where children were excited about learning. I made sure to convey my love of the English language to my students and gave them the keys to unlock the wonderful world of literature. I was serious about producing results and helping my students become better readers. I used benchmarks to track their progress throughout the year, and nearly every student advanced in reading growth.
I started my teaching career as a Teach For America corps member in Atlanta, Georgia, where I taught sixth grade language arts at Crawford Long ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am 58 years old, raised 3 children while working as a legal secretary for 25 years. When my last boss retired, I decided to return to college and successfully graduated from DePaul University with a BA in Religious Studies Cum Laude with a minor in Classical Greek. The modern point to Religious Studies is not to teach religion, but where academics relegates Ancient History and ethics. Additionally, I have 3 years experience as an Interpreter for the Deaf for the University of Illinois' Architectural Dept. I am qualified and interested in mentoring/tutoring High School history and English and would love to assist where ever I can.
I believe in mutual respect for intelligence and expect productive and active participation from the student in their pursuit. Depending on the student, I might engage them in an appropriate book about their topic, ask them to find a magazine/newspape ... read more
