My comments on tutoring Geography : skilled through HS level

I use the Socratic method, meeting the students where they are, and using gentle questioning to build on that base. I start with the assumption that all children are gifted learners, and communicate that belief to them. It is essential to create a base of success upon which to build future success. I also spend time finding something to like deeply about each child; and discovering what the child is interested in. When an adult takes an interest in the child's world, and shares that interest in a positive reinforcing manner, it opens to door to learning.
I have taught internship classes and tutored statistics at the University level. I have tutored mathematics from elementary to calculus at a junior college. I have been a GRE instructor for the Stanley Kaplan company I founded, owned and operated the Idaho School of Professional Hypnosis for 10 years, teaching hypnosis and hyp ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

When I was a high school student, I tutored pre-algebra, geometry and algebra, Shakespeare, World Literature, and Earth Science. I managed my own clients and improved test scores with every client. During the summer of 2005, I tutored mentally disabled children in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I attended the University of Idaho and have received a B.S. in Mathematics. While there, I worked at the Polya Math Lab, tutoring college algebra. I continued to tutor on my own during college, and have tutored in all forms of vector calculus, from methods of integration to 3d modeling. I have also tutored Abstract Algebra (group and ring theory), Combinatorics, and Number Theory. I am particularly good at walking people through proofs. While at college, I have also helped people develop their writing skills by participating in over 4 semester-long workshops.

A Little Bit About Me...

None of my family had gone to college, so it was predicted I would not either. I had a hunger to learn, so I systematically worked full-time and studied part-time, earning eight major degrees in cities where they alowed residency rquirements to be met in such a way. I was young and energetic, so it was a lot of work, but a joy. It took about 15 years to finally earn my doctorate. Along the way, I earned certification in a half dozen fields (especially loved English, social stuides, and psychology). I was employed for decades in education, teaching full-time for five years, often teaching on the side when I was counselor or administrator. Except for my earliest years of employment (where I was often employed full-time in radio or newspaper), I often tutored along the way. I have been able to tutor part-time a good many years since I often come across young people (and adults) who ... read more

I have been involved in offering educational services since I was in high school, when I tutored younger students in math, Spanish, research writing, and general elementary subjects. A career in education was a natural choice, and I have taught both ESL and Spanish, with experience in elementary and secondary teaching, as well as teaching online.
Having taught small and large classes, as well as one-on-one, I am a firm believer in the benefit that one-on-one and small group instruction can offer for students. As a teacher, I love being able to identify and capitalize on students' interests and strengths. I believe that all students can learn, and fully embrace and utilize the concepts of learning styles and multiple intelligences to help all students find success, regardless of the area of study.

For the past 2 years since graduating from the University of Oregon I have been working full-time as Psychosocial Rehabilitator within the educational environment of various elementary and secondary schools. I currently manage a Therapeutic Learning Center focused on behavioral modification within the Special Education Department of a local high school. I have experience working with a group of students with disabilities such as: Autism, Reactive Attachment Disorder, Emotional Distressed, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Anger Management Issues. Most of my time is spent in a one-on-one situation with the student. I have a strong background in Math, Social Studies and History.
Working with such a diverse population of students ranging from grades 3-12, I have learned that each child processes information in different ways. Assisting them in overcoming their learning disability ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have had the opportunity to work in the role of tutor for the past five years. I have worked in a correctional setting helping individuals prepare for the GED tests in math, writing, reading, science, and social studies. I have also had the opportunity to tutor younger students in a private setting in the subjects of reading, math, and science. I have earned my bachelor of science in sociology from Boise State University and have been involved in education in one aspect or another for the past nine years.
I am passionate about learning and education. I know that all children have the ability to learn and excel in all subjects and that the positive effects of that success can last a lifetime. I approach teaching through positive communication and interaction. To be able to learn, a child must trust the teacher and develop the motivation to learn. Through consistent work, enthusias ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate from BYU with a BS in finance and composite minors in accounting and economics, I moved into the medical management field. Within 7 years, I had taken a medical practice struggling to survive financially to a 3-physician, 2-midlevel practice. That experience launched a career. Other business background includes general management of a hotel/restaurant/touring company in a resort town. Later, I returned to school to complete an MA in theater. Here, I taught theater as an adjunct professor. I have also written and published a book and several one-act plays and variety shows.
I have a unique approach to teaching because my background is both analytical (numbers and science) and imaginative (theater and literature). While classroom training is my forte, I also have a solid background in teaching online. This combination is particularly useful since no two children learn i ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe if given the right tools, a student can and will succeed in education. If a student feels comfortable in the classroom, I believe that is the first step to the student succeeding. A student isn’t likely to care about work in a class where they feel the teacher hates them, or where the teacher is too easy or difficult. It’s very important for me, as the teacher, to get to know each and every one of my students so I can do the best to make them feel comfortable and important in the classroom. Once I get to know the student I can implement personal challenges and assignments that will cause the student to succeed.
I have always been passionate about art. I am fortunate to have learned my skill from some very talented and capable professors who I admire; I know I have the ability to successfully teach students at all ages and knowledge levels. I have spent much time voluntee ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have spent the last five years attaining my BS in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Idaho. Throughout those four years I have had several opportunities to help out by mentoring young students. I am a part of a greek organization on campus that has housed many students, of which I have had the chance to help. I have tutored in several areas including: English, Mathematics (up to Ord. Differential Equations), programming, engineering, and CAD programs. I also have a lot of experience with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. I have not tutored in, but have recently taken and completed, physics, chemistry, materials, robotics, and economics.
Initially, I like to find out the basics. I want to know their underlying assumptions in any part of academia, whether it's math or science. I have come to find that the very simplest of assumptions can mislead student ... read more

Just telling a child how to do a problem is not effective. I believe a teacher needs to explain the logic and reasoning behind solving certain problems certain ways. Knowing this can help the child discover what works specifically to him/her. If a child learns to reason for his/her self, they gain the ability to be lifetime learners. My hope is, that instead of dreading school they gain confidence in their abilities to figure things out, and therefore find joy in learning. Above all it is important to listen to the kids, stay positive, and never show frustration.
Over the past year I have tutored through The College of Idaho's Chemistry Club. Chemistry, especially the math portions, never came easily to me. I had to work hard and spend hours asking professors questions, but now I am much better at chemistry because of it. As a tutor I wanted to help fellow students who were struggl ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that teaching children is a calling. I love the awe and excitement students express as they accomplish a task. As an educator I believe that my role is to model learning strategies and then give students the opportunity to discover strategies which work for them. My goal is to motivate students to learn through positive encouragement. Above all I believe that learning should be fun and exciting. My goal is to create students who develop a life long love of learning.
After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education I spent 9 years raising my two children. I was actively involved as a volunteer during their preschool and early elementary years. I gained experience in teaching Language Arts and Literacy by first volunteering in their 1st grade classroom and then later as an Aide in a 1st grade classroom. I then went on to teach first grade where I gained ... read more
