Recently I retired from teaching Title I classes. Much of my work has been helping lower elementary students improve their reading skills, often in a 1:1 setting. Besides working with young students, I have worked as high as 8th grade. Usually I have assisted with reading, but I have also helped with math, too. Helping young children learn to read has been the most rewarding thing I have done. It is a joy to watch them catch on to new learning. I like working 1:1 or in small groups. It is important build on a student's strengths, linking to what they know, and tying instruction to his or her interests.

At age 38 when struggling through Iowa State my chem teacher sent me to be tested for learning disabilities and I had multiple learning disabilities but an above average IQ.
