My comments on tutoring Geography : One of my favorite subjects.

I admittedly have little experience, but I have helped Friends with school work in the past. I've proofread for friends and helped them study for tests in lower level classes. I'm a above average student who loves kids, with hopes to be a teacher some point in the future. I'm hoping this way I can help some younger kids get ahead in school.

Certified Secondary Social Studies Teacher

I have taught American and World History, Civics, Economics, and Political Science (Government) and have extensive experience in group and one-on-one teaching strategies. One important thing I bring to the position is classroom teaching experience across a span of development including middle, alternative, and high school students as well three years of experience teaching college freshman. I also have two teenagers of my own. I understand the age group and the unique social and emotional development that characterizes these years of transition. I do what it takes to meet students where they are at.

Critical thinking skills and untraditional ways are what I focus on. However the way someone learns, I will try to set the individual up to show how they learn and work with them. I will implement practices and materials I think will fit the student's profile. I feel a teacher wears many hats and you must be prepared to wear a different one any day.
I have been a tutor for 23 years and I have taught Adult Basic Education for 12 years. I am still continuing my education to receive a Masters degree and plan to get my PhD. I work for a community college and have done advising, enrollment, testing, phone directory, and student sevices. I have attended many professional development workshops on education.

More About This Tutor...

I went to school at EMU with the intention of getting a doctorate in Physics, to teach at the college level. I ended up getting a job in IT at the University, and found I enjoy this just as much. While a student, I volunteer tutored for the Society of Physics Students, and I tutor all the student employees I have when they are taking physics classes. I love teaching, and the students that I have tutored have excelled under my supervision.
I try my best to make the student figure things out on their own, by giving simple guiding questions or comments. I do not like to simply do the problems for them, as I find most people do not learn well this way. I am patient and empathetic, and I understand what it is like to approach a problem from the position of a student who is confused or unsure. I try to give them the tools to understand basic problem solving and critical thinking.

More About This Tutor...

I tutored with the Writing Fellows every Thursday at Schoolcraft College when I was working towards my Associate's in Liberal Arts. I helped students write and edit their papers. The primary focus was English but there were a few Social Studies/History students thrown in there. I graduated in April 2009 from Eastern Michigan University with my Bachelor's Degree in Electronic Media and Film with a Minor in Creative Writing.
I would usually look the paper over and point out problems with grammar and spelling and tell the student why they weren't working. I believe in the mantra "show, don't tell" when it comes to teaching. I'm pretty laid back and willing to work at whatever pace the student is comfortable with. I don't move on until I feel both of us are on the same page. I think the history of the English language has a lot of really interesting trivia.

My style has always been to encourage questions from the student or with the many people who have worked for me over the years to challenge the status quo. I encourage individuals to stretch the envelope and to seek different solutions rather than accept what has been done before. I have also stressed that there is never a bad question or wrong to think outside the box. For example I have always asked students, "Why study history?" What I relish now,is that many respond, "To learn how we got here." Communication is the key and it is very important for the student to trust and respect the relationship that develops between student and tutor. With out this trust learning becomes very difficult.
In college I tutored at one of the high schools while monitoring study hall three days a week. After graduation I joined the Peace Corp. I served in the Tonga Islands in the South Pac ... read more

It is my philosophy that all students want to learn and express their intellectual selves. First, a rapport is crucial. Students will work hardest for teachers who care about them. It is my pride to be known as a funny, intelligent, approachable, caring teacher and tutor while enjoying a reputation as a notorious academic hardcase. As I tell all of my students, quoting legendary baseball coach John McGraw: "The object of the game is to win." Learning builds confidence and self-reliance, which, in turn, leads to a desire to learn more. Learning is the most addictive substance known to man.
Having graduated from the University of Michigan(GPA 3.863) and received endorsements in English and History that make me a highly qualified teacher in these areas per NCLB standards, I feel I have a lot to offer. A Little Bit About Me...

The key to educating children is to instill in them a lifelong passion for learning. Every day I try to do that with my students. Although, they come into my class with a lot of "baggage" from home and challenges with being bilingual I build their confidence through specific praise. I also challenge them to think "out of the box". I applaud creativity and discovery. In addition, I provide a safe learning environment by being patient and understanding of their needs. Through this, I hope I instill in my students what they need to meet their life's goals and dreams.
The summer I was a camp counselor I knew that I wanted to make a difference in children's lives. At that point, I decided to complete my BS in Kinesiology and then pursue an MA in Education. Upon graduation, I was employed by Detroit Public Schools teaching low income, bilingual children. I have predominantly tau ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a very easy-going individual; I don't like to push too much but am encouraging. The way I think teaching Italian works best is to make associations with the English language. The two languages are so heavily intertwined, but not at face value. After learning Italian, my knowledge of English is much more profound. Tutoring is very rewarding to me and making a difference in someone's life is important.
While at Wayne State University, I studied Geography, Urban Studies and the Italian language. When I graduated, I held a BA in Geography with minors in Urban Studies and Italian. During my education at Wayne, as I gained a good knowledge of the Italian language, I started to tutor lower-level students. In the end, I tutored Italian for one and a half years.

I feel that children learn best through rich experiences with a variety of materials. Children learn better when instruction is "hands-on" rather than listening to a teacher lecture. The most learning possible can be achieved if variety of senses and "multiple intelligences" are stimulated. Each child is different, and by working one-on-one with them, I will be able to find out what works best for each child. I believe that the point of tutoring is to help children reach their full potential and to give them a chance to succeed in school and in life.

In 2007 I had the wonderful opportunity of being one of two teachers at the Ann Arbor Academy's lower school for students with learning disabilities. I have worked as a Teacher's Assistant for three years where I did extensive tutoring with one student over the course of the year. I substitute taught for two years where I learned a great deal about schools, particularly elementary schools and their various curriculum and expectations for grade levels. As well, I was a full time tutor and mentor for students at Pine Ridge Academy for a year while I lived in Burlington. I also teach the second grade religious school class at my temple. I am also a substitute teacher for a day school.
