I have just about ten years teaching grades pre-k through eight grade. I took the requirements to obtain a teaching minor and certification, except the student teaching and the test because I decided to switch gears and go to law school. I am experienced in both the Michigan Grade Level Expectations as well as the Michigan's Adaptation of the Common Core Curriculum. Critical thinking skills and untraditional ways are what I focus on. However the way someone learns, I will try to set the individual up to show how they learn and work with them. I would usually look the paper over and point out problems with grammar and spelling and tell the student why they weren't working. I believe in the mantra "show, don't tell" when it comes to teaching. I'm pretty laid back and willing to work at whatever pace the student is comfortable with. I don't move on until I feel both of us are on the same page. I think the history of the English language has a lot of really interesting trivia.
I tutored with the Writing Fellows every Thursday at Schoolcraft College when I was working towards my Associate's in Liberal Arts. I helped students write and edit their papers. The primary focus was English but there were a few Social Studies/History students thrown in there.
