Learning can be fun!!

When tutoring, I strive to make lessons engaging, effective and enjoyable. Specifically, I tailor lessons according to an individual student's needs and involve students in a dialogue by asking questions that provoke thought, conversation, and perhaps humor. Because facts and figures are easily looked up in the information age, I place particular emphasis on thinking and on "learning how to learn". I first find out your true objective for learning the material. Is it a requirement and not in your field of study so you just want to pass the class or is this a part of your passion or career and really want to know the nuts and bolts of the subject. I will adjust accordingly and make out a plan. I will also figure out the best way to teach you the material and from there we will have a plan to accomplish the targeted goal.
I have a lot of experience not only in fields that you may need help learning, but I also spent time during college tutoring classmates as I was in the class and developed a style to help students learn quickly and also reinforce the concepts. My comments on tutoring GED : I had worked with students from a variety of cultural backgrounds in alternative schools preparing them for the GEDs. I have also been part of the exam process.

I have taught in Michigan and in California. I also have credentials as a school counselor and psychologist. I have experience with all aspects of the special education system from the K through grade 12 level. This incudes testing, placement and re-evaluation and the IEP process. I also have worked at the post secondary level and am familiar with academic and financial aide requirements.
I am very aware of the necessity of adapting my teaching style to the learning modality of those I am working with. As an educator I evaluated students to define how they best process information. They may be auditory learners, visual learners or they may use a combination approaches. I am very patient and understand that everyone can learn. I believe in setting goals and evaluating progress to establish new goals when necessary.

All students can learn, but in different ways. I, for one, learn best by watching how something is done. I can read about it, or hear a lecture about it, but seeing it helps me understand the subject. This type of teaching would be done with movies, drawing or acting out the situation. In my teaching, I try to use all methods available to me to help the students learn and to use their creativity. I especially try to get students to work in groups and to share their work with each other. I find that pier groups provide the best help in understanding the subject matter. As a Merchant Marine and Chief Steward I have taught, tutored, or mentor kids of all ages and backgrounds. My passion when teaching is to try and breakdown the subject to it's most basic level.
