My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : While I have not had any students with Dyslexia, I have recently read The Gift of Dyslexia and feel I have an understanding of what students experience. I am willing to work on strategies to help the student at home and in school.

I like to see where the student is and meet him there. Look at what needs to be taught and discover the best way to impart that learning to the individual child.
I have taught K for 13 years. I understand the value of one on one time, and that students are all different. Recently I spent 10 months teaching missionary children in Uganda. There I taught 4th, 5th, and 7th graders. Students in my class have had vision issues, autism, aspergers, and ADD/ADHD. With each situation, I have evaluated where the student was and revamped how I was teaching to meet their needs.

My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Lindamood-Bell, Wilson, Orton Gillingham

I employ specialized methods of instruction. When working with the learning disabled, I take the time to diagnose their processeing abilities and learning style. My interventions are targeted and I am able to teach my students to use their strengths to help them overcome their weaknesses. When working with students who are on the autism spectrum I take the time to incorporate their interests when introducing new concepts to them. I am well versed in TEACCH and ABA for autism.
I am an educational consultant in Cannon County, Tennessee. Over the years I have developed programs and curriculums for several schools and school districts. As the daughter of educators, I have been exposed to the education system all my life. As a result of this exposure, I became very interested in tutoring and teaching. I taught for two years as a substitute teacher before attending law school. I previously worked as a substitute teacher with Morrow Elementary in North Lauderdale, Florida where I taught test-taking strategies for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Most recently, I have volunteered with Youth Encouragement services as a tutor.
Based on previous experience I have discovered that the same teaching style does not work for every child. I find that explaining each topic and asking the child question gives a clear indication of their understanding. Based on responses to the questions adjustments may be made to address each child's need.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from Arkansas State University in 1974 and taught third grade for seven and a half years, then moved to another town and taught 5th grade resource for six years. I relocated to Tennessee and taught high school special education for seven years. After deciding that I enjoyed teaching younger children, I transferred to Cheatham Middle School, where I presently teach fifth grade inclusion. I taught summner school for several years, as well as doing homebound education for Cheatham County. I have also worked for A to Z Tuoring. I have had training in the Wilson Program for dyslexic children and have used the SRA Reading Program.
I chose teaching as a career because I love working with children and making a difference in their lives. I want my students to be successful and will use the technique that works best for each child. I have been to several workshops and train ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a special education teacher, I have tremendous patience and have seen tremendous progress, measured both in small steps and in giant leaps. I am a strong believer in individualized education, and subscribe to the theory that each child can achieve greatness. My goal is to influence each student with humor, hands-on activities and first-hand applicable experience. It is also important that as a tutor, I use audio-visual materials to strike every learning chord. I also strongly believe that students learn best through a mix of guided and independent practice, and a positive and stress-free learning environment. All students have the capability to achieve, and can reach their ultimate goals of success when confronted with real-world applicable opportunities as well as with rote practice. I am passionate about teaching and will exude an air of exuberance to make a difference in each ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As an English major at the University of Florida, I found a love for language learning and language acquisition; as a result, I declared Linguistics and TESL as additional majors. In these majors, I became quit ept at understanding grammatical principles and language learning theory. I began volunteering my knowledge to foreign language learners and found that I loved helping others learn. After receiving my BA, I began teaching writing and reading to native and non-native speakers at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, FL. As an English teacher, I also found other job opportunities at labs on campus and with private tutoring companies. One of the labs I worked in, the CLAST lab, also tutored math: college algebra, statistics, geometry, and logic. In this lab, I learned how to effectively teach math as well. In addition, I began teaching speed reading with a private seminar gr ... read more

I enjoy working with children, waiting for the "ah ha" moment to arrive. When it does, there is nothing, like it. I believe strongly in the saying "there are no bad students, only bad teachers". I believe that every student is capable of learning, the trick is to find a way that makes it real and applicable to each individual student. I believe that the keys to success are student motivation, the tutor's flexibility and lots of patience. Show them, let them touch it, model it, read it, break it down into smaller manageable pieces, make it fun,...whatever it takes to increase their desire to learn. While the focus is to achieve academic success that does not exclude making it fun to learn.
Over the past ten years, I have worked for four school districts providing after-school tutoring to students with a learning disability. I have worked with all subject matters from preschool t ... read more
