My teaching style varies depending on the student. Perhaps my biggest asset is empathy as I can easily tell when a student (or group) gets it. I have taught Medical Neuroanatomy to medical students at the University of Iowa Medical School. Students were directed in dissecting and identifying parts of the human brain. Everyone has style of teaching that is unique. Mine is at first appearance very laid back, but on closer inspection is very powerful and extremely effective in the long run. My strategy as a teacher is to study and assess a student first, then to develop a plan with the student regarding how we should approach a task or problem. I am big on having students develop a stronger internal locus of control, empowering them to feel capable to tackle anything that they might encounter with or without the help of others. I first started teaching in 2003 as a substitute to supplement the income from my guiding business during the slower portion of the year. After showing that I was very capable in the classroom and could quickly develop a strong rapport with coworkers and students, I was hired for the year when another teacher left unexpectedly. As a recent college graduate, I was motivated to study Physics because I find the fundamental nature of the physical world fascinating. In addition to my B.S. in Physics, I also minored in Religious Studies and this course of study has enabled me to understand and communicate with people from a variety of different backgrounds. When I wasn’t in class I spent nearly 3 years doing particle physics research for CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, which I would work at in Geneva Switzerland during the summer. During my four years at college I have tutored students from a variety of different skill levels in several different physics courses, including Classical Mechanics, Optics, Electricity and Magnetism, and the Philosophy of Physics. Every student has a unique skill level and learning style, and I believe tutoring is an opportunity for me to help that student learn in his or her own unique way.

I have a passion for helping people, and nothing satifies me more than helping a person understand a concept and succeed in his or her class. I teach using a lot of examples and incorporating the concepts into the example problems so that the student can see how the examples are based on the concepts. I strive to know the students well so they don't just see me as a tutor but also as a friend who is easily approachable with questions. I worked for over 2 years as a study session leader for various engineering courses while getting my B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. I also tutored several students in engineering classes at the college level. I have experience working with elementary through high school students as well.
