My comments on tutoring SAT - Verbal : I have a BA in English and have tutored students for the verbal section of the SAT.

I prefer the Socratic method of asking/answering questions and discussion, but I am more than capable of diverting to a more lecture style of teaching if that is what works with the student. I tailor my teaching style to the strengths of the student.
I am a teacher with 7 years of classroom experience. My degree is in English, but I have taught in many other areas, including math, history, logic, and rhetoric. I have also tutored many students in grammar and writing, as well as Algebra I and II. I have been responsible for teaching books to students from American Literature (Hawthorne and Hemingway), European Literature (Dickens and Shakespeare), and World Literature (Gilgamesh and Homer).

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that activities for my classes should be student centered, authentic and focused on individual learning styles. I attempt to create an accepting environment and choose activities that connect learning to something my students know or value. I evaluate the progress of my students with varied types of ongoing positive evaluation and I integrate technology into class activities. I enjoy an active, energetic classroom much more than a sedate, quiet setting.
My professional experience has been divided almost equally between teaching and administrative jobs. I have always wanted to be a teacher. I began tutoring while I was still in high school. I earned my BS in Elementary Education in 1980. I have tutored students of all ages in different subjects. Most of my tutoring experience has been in math and reading. I have tutored students for all sections of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam. I have been a homebound and home-school teacher, as well as a classroom teacher.
I love to help children learn! It is so rewarding to see the reaction of a child who suddenly understands what he has been trying to learn. I try to help my students build confidence in themselves by helping them realize that they do have the ability to learn. I want every child to know he is loved and special.
