While working as an engineer I discovered a passion for teaching and the joy of "sharing" knowledge with others. I am now semi-retired and would like to extend that passion by tutoring in science and mathematics on a part-time basis. I have three engineering degrees as well as teacher certification in secondary science and mathematics. I have taught in a high school and middle school, as well as at the community college level. I am proficient in all areas of mathematics and physical sciences that are offered at the secondary level, and my engineering experience has taught me how to apply these skills as well as communicate effectively in reports and other technical documents. I earned a Bachelor of Science from The Ohio State University in 1984. My subjects of passion were math and science and I enjoy working with children who struggle in those areas. I have home schooled my son through the end of 12th grade and he was ready for college freshman classes at age 15. Starting in his second grade year, we were joined by a student who has learning disabilities. He also thrived in the tutorial teaching environment. My desire is to work with children who really desire to learn but need that extra time and encouragement to succeed. I have experience working with both audio/visual learners and a kinesthetic/tactile learner. The kinesthetic/tactile learner had learning disabilities akin to ADD, but still did very well in the small group environment. My teaching style starts usually with a question to spark and interest, or perhaps another question. I idenify with the audience and that is extremely helpful. I am patient and enjoy when a student finds confidence by learning something new. I use some props and examples to aid a particular subject, and I speak English very well so there is no miscommunication. I am interested in working again as a Mathematics Tutor, I've had a very enriching previous experience from former employers at Colorado State University-Pueblo, where I've obtained two degrees, a B.S. in Mathematics and a B.S.B.A. in Economics. I have found that no matter how much anyone person would like to teach, no one can force someone to learn. With that in mind, if I remember to approach each student as an individual with his or her own abilities, concerns, and goals, I will have a more successful result as an educator. I have learned that each individual has at least one trigger, for want of a better word, which will entice them unconsciously to want to learn. One of my goals is to find that element. No matter how “cool” a student is, most only want to be listened to, I have a talent for doing just that.
