Because I enjoy the learning environment and have been in one for 16 years, I have learned much about it. Everyone learns differently, and I feel that it is important to understand the student's easiest way to learn in order to proceed. I believe offering students the chance to use their imagination and to encourage creativity is the best approach to education. Whether it is through mental imaging or hands-on learning, each individual student deserves a chance at better education.

" The mediocre teacher tells, the good one explains, the superior one shows, and the great one inspires..." I will inspire, explain, and show... in that order. Regardless of age (my youngest student was 4 and my oldest was 65) I believe that motivation is the cornerstone of all great learning. In fact, teaching without true motivation and belief is just glorified babysitting. Through inspiration and my extensive knowledge in various areas, your loved one will succeed. It is inevitable.

After working in the Marketing/PR field for 5 years, I relocated to Puerto Rico to be with my husband. Not having a solid foundation of the language, I could not obtain a job in my previous field. It was at this time that I discovered the world of education. I began substitute teaching at the Department of Defense School and continued doing that for one year. We were then relocated to Savannah, GA and I was hired by a private school to teach 6th and 7th grade English, Literature and Social Studies. I taught at this school for 3 years and tutored each summer. We then relocated to Ohio and I have been tutoring for the past six months(including inner city students).
I thoroughly enjoyed the Marketing and Public Relations field, but I never could have imagined the fulfillment I would recieve within education. I love to challenge my students and show them just how much they can a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a good listener and let the student tell me what problems they are having in any subject. I ask them questions to get them to think about what they're learning in depth. I let them explain things to me instead of just explain everything to them, this way I can find out what they already know and give them feedback so that they can improve on their weaknesses. I am patient with them and let them work at their own pace, never rushing them. I tailor my tutoring to each student's individual needs.
I tutored at Case Western Reserve's Center for Civic Engagement and Learning. I tutored kids of in middle school at the local library in all subjects. I have a bachelor's degree in biology and am in the postbaccalaureate program in nutrition.

My undergraduate degree included a minor in Special Education which helped me in future employment where I have worked with children who have a variety of needs. For three years while I was an undergraduate at The University of Akron, I worked as a peer tutor with the Department of Developmental Programs. During that time I took three tutor training courses and earned a Level II tutoring certificate from the College Reading and Learning Association. I tutored students in psychology, sociology, and basic statistics courses. As a peer tutor I had the opportunity to become a learning assistant. This position paired me with a professor and I served as a tutor for the assigned class, for the year I served as a learning assistant for Quantitative Methods in Psychology and Basic Statistics.

I believe that comparing complex concepts to everyday, personal objects and situations is the most effective way to learn. Therefore, I am big on metaphors. Algebraic concepts and formulas can often be, I have found, analogous to much simpler ideas or images. Once the abstract is related to the mundane, we can break down the barrier to understanding that can be an automatic or habitual construction for many people. I am also an advocate of learning by example; I will walk through a problem or two, step by step, until the process becomes obvious. From there, equations can become identifiable patterns that essentially require you to simply "fill in the blanks".
I earned a 98% in my College Algebra course this past fall so I am here to lend a hand to those who could use it. My focus in college was Communication with a minor in Philosophy. I also studied international relations for 6 m ... read more

As a tutor, my number one goal is to assist students in understanding the root of the material before advancing into further knowledge or techniques. I am a patient, empathic, understanding tutor. I am willing to take the time required to help the student reach a point of complete understanding. As a creative and adaptable person, I look for opportunities to convey the information in varying ways to best help the student. I especially enjoy tutoring the lower-level math classes and assisting students in writing/ proofreading papers. As an undergraduate student, I received fifty-plus hours of training, and throughout my tutoring career have assisted elementary level students through postsecondary.

A Little Bit About Me...

It was in my senior year at UConn that I learned about a program called City Year that enables young people as myself to work within the realm of urban education. As a City Year corps member, I was able to work both inside the classroom and after school with a group of 22 ninth grade boys at Glenville High School in Cleveland. Not only was I able to do in-class tutoring with these adolescents, but I was also able to to mentor them by encouraging them to do the right thing. Being so close in age to my students, I was further able to bridge the communication gap between these boys and their teachers.

I have a variety of experience. Most of my tutoring experience is with older students, aged 15 or older. However, I feel that I could work with younger kids as well. I love learning, and I get excited when a student fully grasps the material. I try and reinforce a teachers method of teaching. However, if repetition is not the issue, than I try and explain topics in different ways with lots of examples.I believe a tutor can really be a great supplement to the classroom teacher.
