You must inspire them to want to learn. At the 1-on-1 setting (tutoring level), I work at a very detailed level with the particular student I have with me at the time. Each one is sufficiently different to warrant different teaching approaches to maximum effect and retention. My approach is to guide the student through a problem or two to allow them to see the steps as clearly as possible. I ask leading questions if the student seems to be struggling with the process so they can tell me what they think they need to do next. This enables them to solve that type of problem more easily because they are figuring it out on their own rather than having me just tell them the steps.
