As a graudate student I was a held a postion as a Graudate Research Assistant for the Geotechnical Lab. As such I taught undergraduate students the theory behind laboratory test, what each test provides the engineer and how to conduct the test. Furthermore I assisted undergraduate students with homework problems and helped them prepare for tests.
I am very hands on. I like to first show how a problem is done, discuss the purpose of each step and then the student work the problem. From there I prefer to have students work problems and ask questions as they come up. After each problem is complete I then review the problem with the student.

I love helping people, love math and all sciences. Always trying different ways and methods with patient when I'm doing the job of tutoring. Always recognize what type of problems they have, whether it's academically or personally. When I tutor, I try not to tell students the answer, rather, tell them how to get the answer, give them some starting steps, describe the steps in a different problem so they can work out the answer by themselves and learn the way. I always trying to be friends with the students, care about their lives so that they will trust me and make the whole tutoring experience much more enjoyable and effective for both of us.

I learn best when I relate the subject to everyday life. Therefore, I enjoy explaining materials in basic terms. I provide links so anyone I teach will remember principles and concepts and to be able to solve problems for themselves.
During college, I worked as a Teaching Assistant at Duquesne University for 4 years. There I helped to teach the Pharmaceutics Principles Lab to professional Pharmacy Students. Outside of college, I have recently taught math, science and geography to middle school students.

Science and technology do not have to be difficult or abstract. I know how to make Chemistry interesting and relevant to everyday life. If students need help with the math that is required for Chemistry, I know how to bring them up to speed. When students are willing to keep trying to learn, I will keep trying to help them.
I have enjoyed teaching Chemistry, Computer Programming and Freshman General Science for the past 20 years in Missouri and Kansas. I like to use current events and computerized resources to help students learn. I love science, but more importantly I know how to help students understand concepts rather than memorize. Together we can learn skills to prepare for further study in math and science. By helping each student construct his or her own knowledge, science becomes more relevant and important.

Physical science and math are often the most difficult subjects for students, but I believe anyone can understand the "basic idea." The difficulty comes from attempting to connect their intuitive understanding with the symbols on the paper. Many students think of these subjects as the memorization of formulas. But if they grasp the "basic idea," they can adapt and apply it to any problems they face. Instead of developing a toolbox of formulas, my goal as a teacher is to help the student develop a toolbox of problem-solving strategies. I learn where a student has strengths and exploit these strengths as a pathway to connecting the tangible and abstract, the "basic idea" and the mathematical symbols.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently in my last year of undergraduate work in mathematics at UMKC. I have been an informal math tutor for numerous students in the last few years. Last semester I worked for the UMKC Physics department as a lab assistant for graduate students, and did physics tutoring. I have a strong knowledge in mathematics all the way up through differential equations, and advanced proofs techniques. I realize I do not yet have a plethora of experience, but helping fellow students with math has always been enjoyable and rewarding to me.
I enjoy tutoring because it allows me to share the thought processes I go through when trying to solve a math problem. In high school I struggled with mathematics, which I believe has always given me a special insight into other people's struggle with the subject. In my opinion the best way to teach someone is to simply discuss the subject with them unt ... read more
