Education, teaching in particular, gives individuals the opportunity to give back what they have received. It is communication on a broader level than just simply putting forth information to whomever chooses to accept it. I started my career in education before I set foot on a college campus, through a peer-tutoring program in my high school. This experience allowed me to work with severely disabled peers learning functional skills for independence. Since then I have worked as an aide in emotional/behavior and multiple-disability middle school classrooms, as well as LD-resource, ED self contained and SC occupational diploma program. In addition I have earned a degree of distinction with the National Forensic League, been name a scholar-athlete in South Carolina and a host of other accolades in scholarship. I have experienced both urban and suburban school settings and have had inc ... read more

I love working with children and young adults. My challenge as a tutor is to take something that is difficult and make it fun and understandable. Too often students look at teachers or adults as enemies, and I try to take a very laid-back, conversational approach when tutoring. Obviously if the child is being tutored in a particular subject, there is an obstacle or a problem in that area so it is important to build the child's confidence and show them that they can succeed. There is nothing more satisfying.
I have always had a desire to teach and be involved in education. After earning a degree in Broadcasting, I decided to change fields and get into teaching. I first worked in an on-site language sch ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a BA in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and graduated in 1986. I am also a former officer in the North Carolina Army National Guard. For the last 12 years I have been in the business world, and that is where I have used my degree the most. I bring to the table real world English skills. On average, I produced 8 – 10 written documents per month that my employees used as their guide in the performance of their duties, each tailored to a specific situation. Some very detailed, some not so detailed. To produce these documents, I read approximately 3 other documents along with my job experience.
My teaching style I would describe two-fold: First, my military background taught me their three step process; tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you told them and my own personal style which is a hybrid of the ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with children and have wanted to be a teacher since I was in the fourth grade. My favorite part about teaching is when I see the "light bulb" go on in a child's mind and there is excitement about learning. I think every child can learn and that children need structure and guidance in the learning process. I also believe that children can do more than what we often think they can so they need to be encouraged to stretch their thinking, to use their imaginations, and to not give up when something is difficult or challenging.
I have seven years of teaching experience, five of those in Texas and two in South Carolina. I also have three years of substitute teaching experience. I have taught 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, and I have substitute taught all elementary grades and some middle and high school grades. I am strong in both mathematics and language arts.

I believe all students can learn. I am a very patient and easy going teacher. I use humor to break the tention when the stress gets to high for students. I do however set very high expectations for my students. But they always seem to achieve the goals that have been set. I know they can work to or serpass their potential. Teaching students is the key to change in the world because we can only change through being educated. So I work hard for my students and expect the same in return.

I believe that involving the student with as much hands on learning as possible, helps them in being able to relate with and withold what they are learning. Also paying attention when there are areas of struggle for the student and focusing attention on them. I like to have fun while teaching in order to take some of the pressure of learning off of the mind.

A Little Bit About Me...

I attended Furman University on a full academic and golf scholarship where I majored in Health and Exercise Science. My strengths during school were math and science subjects. Because I attended a Liberal Arts school we got a very well rounded education so I also have experience in subjects such as literature, reading, religion, economics, political science, computer science and history. I've played professional golf for the last 8 years and currently work as a public speaker talking with high school athletes about the college recruiting process. This new position of working with high schools kids got me interested in tutoring and it allows me the freedom of being flexible with my schedule.

I believe everyone can do mathematics. It just has to be explained to the student in a way so that he can relate to it. I believe in presenting the material in several different ways so that it can be understood. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with other people and would like to help your child excel in math and science.
I do not have current experience teaching or tutoring for pay. I did some tutoring of high school students and fellow classmates while I was in college. Since then, I have been the "go-to" person in my family for help with math and science. I tutored one of my sisters in her classes at St Charles Community College. She graduated with an Associates degree in AutoCAD last year. I helped her with all her cad, math, physics, and engineering classes. From 2002 thru 2008, I tutored one of my nieces through her junior high and high school math and science classes. I feel th ... read more
