My teaching style I would describe two-fold: First, my military background taught me their three step process; tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you told them and my own personal style which is a hybrid of the discovery method and guided question and answer. I have always been a firm believer in that there are no dumb or silly questions. If a child or an adult has a question, there is a reason for that question and it deserves the best answer possible. I love learning and the precision arts such as mathematics. This has driven me to begin in a computer career. I spent almost two decades applying my computer skills. Learning has never stopped for me. But then I love the outdoors and working with my hands. I have taught myself the carpentry trade and the concrete business. I started out by sitting down with the manuals and memorized the building codes before I built my own house. Recently I applied mathematics to a roof I was building. Giving a student the answer does not facilitate their learning. My style of tutoring and teaching is to reinforce the basics, ask leading questions and give examples that assist the student discover the correct answers for him or herself.
While substitute teaching various subjects, I discovered my hidden talent – making math understandable for youth. My other gifts include excellent grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. I don’t have a teacher’s certificate, however, and am currently choosing not to substitute, but I miss the personal interaction with students who want to learn.
