I love piano and schoolwork

I have been a math, science, history, and music tutor since high school. I conduct for a church choir and have taken piano lessons for many years. I a currently taking advanced lessons with my college professor. Being a part of many organizations in high school has made college a wonderful experience thus far. I was taught how to study and learn to my benefit, and I would love to help a child learn how to appreciate school and/or music.

Since graduating from college, I have pursued further education through supplemental education. While working, I have attended classes in the evenings to keep current with teaching trends, practical classroom skills and the social-emotional needs of children in learning. For 8 years, I was an instructional assistant, but also substituted and served as an after school tutor. For the past 5 years, I have been a pre-school teacher with Migrant Head Start. Most of my teaching experience has been in classrooms with students from the toddler stage through 6th grade. My favorite areas to teach are phonics, reading, and elementary math. However, in the passed five years I have tutored pre-school age through adults in many areas, and homeschooled all areas in elementary and middle school. I also taught English as a second language. I love guiding a student through some difficult or misunderstood content and getting the "ahha!" of understanding at the end.
My experience has taught me that all children can learn, but often in different ways. Finding the mode of learning for each student is the key. I try to find different ways to present the information until the child understands. It is also important to review and practice in order to reach the learning goal. I begin by establishing rapport with the student, and usually I prefer a lighthearted, encouraging style of interaction. I believe every student is capable of learning, but may not have been shown the strategies and skills that will best suit them.
