The process is just as important as the product. If a student can come up with the correct answer, but he or she has no idea how or why it is correct or how they got it, I feel like their learning is incomplete. Especially in Math, but also in many other subjects, concepts build upon each other. For this reason, I like to explain not just *how* to get there, but also *why* we got that answer; then students have a firmer foundation for the trickier concepts. Practice, practice, practice. Math is not learned by watching, it is learned by doing. Some types of problems can be learned after only a few examples, others take much more time and patience. My role as a tutor is help guide students through a problem while doing as little of the actual calculations as possible. I try to make my students see that many problems, while different in appearance, are actually the same as ones they've already solved before.
