My strongest area of expertise in teaching is reading. I have taught it for years. I have come to the conclusion through both personal experience, observation of other master teachers and through current educational research that it is most necessary to teach reading and math daily in a systematic manner while exposing the students to a learning rich environment(a classroom reading corner full of books is ideal for this). Research shows that a child needs 100 exposures, repetitions of for example the word “fox” to learn how to read it and make it their own.
I have worked with children in the public school system for thirty-four years as a classroom teacher, Title I augmented reading teacher and as a media specialist. Largely due to my years experience as a reading teacher my class of inner city children scored in the top one percentile on the Georgia Criterion Reference Test(GA ... read more

Teaching has been my passion for many years. I have taught swimming lessons since 1980 and found that I enjoyed working with children so much that decided to make it my career. I realize that every child is an individual and requires instruction that suits their learning style. It is my desire to provide each and every child with the tools that they will need to be successful in their academic career. I firmly believe that all children can and will be successful if they are properly nurtured and directed. I believe that I have the ability and skill to make the children that I work with successful.
As a child of an educator I learned the importance of good education very early in my life. I earned my teaching degree and went on to teach elementary school for several years. I was the grade group chairman, math liason and served on the committee to improve test scores while kee ... read more

I love teaching children. For the younger children, I tend to be more hands on with projects and objects to help them learn. I also believe visual aids are very good. For middle school children learning math and English, I feel like giving them lots of practice problems and going over it together really seems to help. For students in high school it usually depends on the kid. By this age most of them have discovered if they are visual, kinetic, or auditory learners. Based on the type of learner they are , I like to adjust my teaching style.
I tutored for Mission: Mentor while I attended Georgia State Universtity for 3 years. I was awarded Mentor of the Year in 2006 at Georgia State University. When I continued my education at Augusta State University, I volunteered as a mentor at the ASU Literacy Center helping children of all ages.

A Little Bit About Me...

I spent 4 years in college teaching preschool, as well as 2 years as a high-needs reading tutor for the psych dept at my university. My degree is in journalism/English Lit and my GPA in Lit was a 3.7. I have three children of my own, and they are all avid readers, with my oldest reading 150+ books per school year. I'm well-aware of the current and classical children's literature out there, and taught both of my older children to read - at 5 and 3, respectively.
I'm very laid back and just enjoy being around children. Every child is different and has different interests and difficulties. One box does not fit all, and it's a matter of figuring out how to relate to the child at hand and make the subject matter appealing to them that I enjoy the most.

More About This Tutor...

During my course as a math tutor, I’ve found one on one tutoring to be most effective. Each child presented different needs and was receptive to different teaching methods, so I would meet with them individually. I believe each child is just as likely to succeed as the next one, and as a tutor, it is my job to encourage and instill confidence in them.
As I approach my college graduation, I have realized how fortunate I am to have been given the opportunity to attend college. I understood the importance of understanding math in life early on and my Finance degree only validated that notion. Early this year, I began tutoring advanced math to middle school kids and found it to be a rejuvenating to see young minds eagerly waiting to be academically challenged.

Every teacher must recognize that individuals learn at their own pace. I try to begin at a pace that the student feels comfortable with while gradually challenging them to improve their performance. My technical background makes me a very visual person. I like to incorporate that in my instruction, using visual aides and examples. Placing student of varying levels together will aide the learning process. My three-step guide is learn—teach—perform. If a student has learned the material well enough to teach another, they are well on their way to master the subject.
I have worked in the private sector for over 28-years. During that time, I have earned Associates Degrees in Business Administration and Mechanical Engineering Technology. I have also earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. The majority of my career has been spent working with un-skilled laborers, which has a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As an undergraduate student of Augusta State Universities Middle Grades program, I have gained a wealth of experience working with children. I have learned a variety of methods of teaching, in order to execute the best method for each individual student. My concentration areas, in the program, were Math and Social Studies, and during my student teaching I tutored students in math after school 2 days a week.
I believe that children can do great things if given the chance, and it is up to us as educators to gladly give them that chance. I also believe that every child is different, so what works for one may not work for another. Knowing this and having a willingness to try new things is what truly will help a child to learn. Children also need a positive light in their lives. If people around them believe in them and encourage them to do well, then I believe they will. Childre ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

During my matriculation through college I have tutored students in various math and science subjects such as college algebra, trigonometry, calculus I & II, Physics, etc. I recently received a Bachelors in Mathematics at FVSU and in the process of obtaining my degree I have become well versed in many mathematical disciplines. I dont have any formal tutoring or teaching in English, Science, or Social Studies but I feel that I am competent enough from my collective studies from elementary school to college that I can assist in these subjects but Math is my specialty area.
I enjoy helping others and believe knowledge should be shared. I believe everyone can learn and proper guidance and understanding is all that is needed to achieve this. I am patient with my with whomever I tutor and dedicated to them as long as they're dedicated in our time together. I'm determined for them to a ... read more
