Multiple-subject Tutor: experienced & easy to get along with

down-to-earth, kind/agreeable, with an occasional twist of humor
I have professionally tutored Math and English as an employee of Ohio University, in a private junior-high and high-school academy, and on an individual basis. I taught a semester of Elementary French at Ohio University in Athens. I am always willing to tutor any subject, but my greatest academic strength lie in language learning. English has long been my strongest subject, and I am fluent in French as well (please see the comments in my subject listing). I am also a long-time musician and singer-songwriter and would gladly provide guitar lessons.

I love to inspire creativity and push for success!

I love to incorporate creative and outside-the-box approaches in my teaching methods. I genuinely believe that often, to get students to understand material, they need to be interested in the concepts and I try to keep that in mind during my preparation. I also believe it is important to help students learn to become critical thinkers and independent learners, and therefore, I try to push them to achieve success beyond what they believe they are capable of achieving.
I have taught English/Language Arts for 3 years to 6-8 grade students, and I have worked as a tutor in various capacities for the past 7 years. This past summer I opened my own business: a program dedicated to teaching the craft of creative writing to kids. Currently, I am back in school at University of Dayton's online graduate program, with a goal of obtaining my Master's of Literacy.

More About This Tutor...

Most recently, I served as a short and long-term substitute in middle school Read 180 classes for Columbus City Schools. Read 180 is a course that strengthens reading skills. Prior to that, I worked as a tutor at Sylvan Learning Center. I facilitated tutoring sessions for small groups of students who presented various needs. I have, also, had the opportunity to teach at Columbus State Community College. There I had the privilege of providing instruction in three sections of a required English class. The goal for students was to produce a research paper written to persuade its audience. My first full-time teaching job, upon graduating from Ohio State, was as a middle and high school Language Arts teacher at a private school. I worked with students in grades six through nine. In addition, I was the first American Sign Language teacher and got the program underway.

Raised in a disadvantaged social-economic environment, I sought success by joining the military; traveling and learning about the world. Upon my retirement I decided to give back by bringing the diversity of the world into the classroom. I graduated college cum laude and served as the President, International English Honor Society; Sigma Tau Delta. My degree in English Literature provides many levels of the written word by allowing for the understanding of differences that is desired and required by the individual learner. I teach all aspects of the curriculm, with emphasis on grammatical skills. During my last long-term position my students increased their state reading and writing scores by over 7%. I enjoy what I do and I do it well.

I volunteered in high school and college tutoring students to read. In high school I was also a music tutor, and a general tutor. Holding a degree in English and History has taught me a lot about many areas of learning that could be used to teach kids effectively.
I like keeping kids engaged. Teaching isn't just about making sure a student knows the facts, but also about helping them develop a passion for learning. Explaining information in several different ways helps individuals as well as groups learn to the fullest, and allows the students to think about subjects in several different ways.

More About This Tutor...

I attended The Ohio State University and got my Bachelors degree in Human Development and Family Sciences with a concentration in Early Childhood Development. After that I continued my education at Capital University to obtain my teaching license for PK-3 regular classroom education, as well as Intervention Specalist K-12 and a Reading Endorsment K-12.
I believe that every child should be given an equal chance to learn. If that means teaching a lesson three different ways to be sure to reach all my students, sometimes that is what it takes. Being flexible is very important in teaching, as it is important to be able to adapt to each student and each class, year to year. I think that all studnets can meet their potential if given appropriate chance and I strive to give students that chance.

I was a tutor during both my graduate and undergraduate schooling. During my undergraduate tutoring experience I worked with students on various types of writing assignments including science reports, doctoral papers, and research papers. I also have some experience tutoring ESL and have worked with young children as well as high school and college students. I have a BA in both English and German, and can tutor in both areas, but I excel in writing, research, and composition.
I believe in encouraging students' ideas and helping them take control of the learning process. Many students are intimidated by unfamiliar material, and need affirmation and guidance in order to succeed. I am a patient and considerate person and I have the interpersonal skills needed to establish a trust relationship with students. Despite my easy going nature, I am rigorous and hold students to high yet ... read more

I believe that a student can learn any subject or topic that they put enough effort into. For some, it is difficult to put in effort into some topics because they think "Oh I'll never get this in a million years!" My focus on tutoring kids is to improve their self-esteem by breaking down examples into smaller pieces and walking through them in a step-by-step manner. It is often that all a student needs to understand concepts are just different examples than what they are presented in class, or the subject matter explained in different terms. Because of my research experience I am also able to provide students with examples on how the topics relate to real life experiences.
I recently graduated from the Ohio State University with a BS in Microbiology. During my time at OSU I tutored both my peers and underclassman in classes ranging from biology, microbiology, chemistry, and v ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I am a recent graduate of The Ohio State University, where I earned my BS in Microbiology. My strong background in science and mathematics allowed me to tutor students in both chemistry and microbiology during my time as an undergraduate. Being the daughter of an English teacher, my writing skills were further polished by time spent in college English classes and writing countless lab reports in microbiology, chemistry, and biochemistry.
I've worked with both high school and college students, both gifted and disadvantaged students, and I believe that the key to being a successful tutor is understanding your student and how he/she learns. Through my experiences, I've learned how to explain subject matter in a way that enables students to repeat back to me in their own words what I just explained. This is critical. I believe students learn best by understanding first, and memorizing ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am driven as a tutor because I love to learn. I love to experience the interconnectedness of subjects and to share these revelations with the students that I am working with. I have a passion for learning that spreads over several academic areas. I not only graduated cum laude with molecular genetics as my major but also took on a minor in entrepreneurship because I realize the opportunities for growth in the field of biotechnology. I have aided disabled students with microbiology and chemistry in the lab setting. It was greatly fulfilling. In addition to my work with disabled students, I have taught English to non-native speakers from countries as disparate as Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Brazil.
When tutoring, I feel it is best to sit back and review the student's work and watch him/her in action. Once I have established where he/she needs work, I show the student a di ... read more
