A Little Bit About Me...

I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Chemisty with a minor in statistics. As an undergraduate, I tutored middle-schoolers in science and math as a volunteer at a local school. I was recently a substitute teacher, teaching all ages and in areas such as the biological sciences, algebra, calculus and psychology. I currently tutor a college student in mathemtics.
I first discovered my love for teaching in high school. I excelled in many areas and helped my fellow students learn. As I furthered my education, my passion for teaching grew and my style changed. I have molded my favorite, and most effective, professor's techniques into my own hybrid. I use humor and compassion to develop the student's understanding. I try to teach to the student and not at them. I teach study habits that will help them learn more effectively on their own.

My dominant teaching style is connecting with students on a personal level. During my time as a mentor at Marina Del Rey, I enjoyed developing a relationship with my mentee inside and outside of the classroom, and I truly believe this helped him excel. I like to take a firm, but fun approach to tutoring, and I always challenge my students to try their hardest to complete a problem and not automatically defer to receiving help from the tutor. Patience and student empowerment are vital aspects of successful tutoring.
Through my education at UCLA, I developed a solid foundation in math and science, while completing my BS in Bioengineering. Additionally, I have well developed communication and grammar skills for an engineer due to several extracurricular activities, which required me to write time-sensitive documentation and reports. I began tutoring K-8 at a local private elementary school. I then became employed at my high school as a tutor. At my high school, I was given the opportunity to work with grades 9-12. My desire to teach stems from my hopeful view of youth. During the past seven years I have been successful in promoting access to higher education to youth of diverse backgrounds by organizing educational workshops and/or working directly on school campuses. I have earned a B.A. in Communications with an emphasis in advertising and a minor in Chicano Studies, which has enabled me to gain skills in public speaking, creative writing and art. Also, I have great knowledge regarding sociology, political science and history.
As an undergrad, I excelled in the arts, history and social science courses. However, I lacked interest in math (I didn't get it) and failed college algebra two times! My goal was to graduate college and I decided to seek help. I came across the tutoring center on campus and found a tutor that changed my perception about math! In brief, my tutor was out going, patien ... read more

I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Physical Science from California State University, Fresno. I received my first teaching experience as a substitute teacher. I next worked as a long-term substitute teacher for a year. I was then offered a full-time, permanent teaching position as a fourth grade elementary school teacher. This position lasted three years. I will never forget the joy I received each time one of my students learned something that they had been struggling with for some time. When that proverbial light bulb came on and you could see the exact “aha” moment twinkle in their eyes, it made teaching the most rewarding career that I have known thus far.
I believe there are many different styles of learning. It is my job to find out which styles your student uses to learn and implement teaching methods that cater to those styles. This creates an e ... read more

Because of my work with persons who have physical and mental problems, I have learned to be patient and sharpen my listening skills. This way I am also able to recognize when someone is frustrated or exhausted and use these signs to better cope with any behavioral problems that may arise. I always utilize positive language and seek to understand an issue a student may have to help promote a comfortable learning environment. I find that many students respond well to a good listener and someone that takes time to give them individualized attention.
I have a BA in Anthropology which means that I have experience working with diverse groups of people and have a certain understanding and appreciation of the differences among individuals.
