History and English: NOT BORING! RELEVANT!!

As a recent graduate of the University of Oregon History Department, I have spent the last two years working with peers to enhance their ability to research, comprehend, and explain historical events through writing. This experience includes courses in Grammar and Literature as well as History of both the U.S. and the world. With a string of A-grades at the 400-level, I believe I am now prepared to help others find similar success by following some simple advice and encouragement.

Skilled teacher and writer dedicated to your success

I like to get to know my students and build a strong relationship with each one. I work to connect the subject matter to their lives and to the real world. I set high standards, but understand that each student will work toward those standards at his or her own pace and in his or her own style.
I taught high school English, journalism and speech for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013. I also taught a year in middle school, a year in community college and worked in administrative positions at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. I have worked with students at all levels, from remedial to advanced placement and worked in an alternative high school setting. I have received training in the scoring of advanced placement literature exams and am a published writer. I also have taught SAT prep classes.

I have recently graduated from Grove City College (PA) with a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology. During my undergraduate studies, I was introduced to a curriculum largely in the fields of chemistry, physics, advanced mathematics (calculus I,II,III),genetics and biochemistry. I was exposed to a very rigorous survey of the general sciences with demanding writing requirements. Likewise, I am very proficient at communicating in the language of science. I have also taught several mid-term and final review sessions as an upper classmen.
As a counselor for two summers at Camp Harlow (eugene, OR), I had my hands full playing, mentoring, and getting know up to twelve kids every week from the ages of 5-14. During this time, effective communication skills were paramount to success along with patience and listening. I work hard to communicate clearly and simply on an appropriate level. T ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Everybody comes to the table with different strengths and, yes, different weaknesses. With a personable, conscientious approach that respects both, students can surprise themselves with what they can achieve. By starting with what you know and expanding outward, instead of starting with what you don’t and working backward, the groundwork for lasting understanding can be laid. Guidance toward discovery, not spoon fed rote repetition, ends in learning. There is no single easy way to teach everyone, yet everyone can be taught to harness their own potential.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in the written word. While pursuing further understanding of a wide range of literature, I earned a BA degree in English literature while maintaining a focus in Philosophy, a core element to critical thinking. Throughout my student life, I combined the grammatical and struct ... read more
