I learned how to play chess about twenty years ago, it's been rather on and off since then. My comments on tutoring College Algebra : I have taught College Algebra to students at National College and Remington College. I wrote an interactive math software program to teach college algebra and it has been puchased by several colleges.

Punctual - prepared and professional. I look at learning rep. styles of students (pictorial, word or kinesthehic). I try to make the learning experience as painless as possible (especially math). I start with pre-tests to gauge where a student is at, then follow-up with teaching content and finish with a post-test to gauge learing objectives that have been met. Depending on the subject, I like to schedule 2-2.5 hrs ateach session. I also like to work out problems for students and e-mail them the results, where applicable.

I have taught computer science courses in business college, and I taught algebra, calculus, and statistics as a graduate student. I remain convinced of the necessity of obtaining basic math skills for success in today's world, and I spend a lot of time maintaining my own skills in math and computers. I am currently spending 8-12 hours per day, mostly programming vectors and mathematical functions as spreadsheet macros.
I try to find a common, basic level of understanding with the student and then show how a few key insights can help the student broaden her/his knowledge.
