I have dedicated the majority of my adult life to reaching and teaching others so that they may reach their potential. For the past thirty years, I have taught Sunday school, youth groups, theatre students, women's groups and most recently high school students in the Dakota Valley School District. I have a Master's degree in Secondary Education, certifications to teach Literature, German, English, Speech, Theatre, and middle school. I have also won many awards(South Dakota Teacher of the Year, Staff of the month (x5), a fellowship in Journalism, Who's Who among high school teachers, and a local VFW award for teaching citizenship in the schools). I believe in setting high expectations for students and believe that all students can learn and excel. Most of the students I work with have had such negative experiences with school that they become frustrated. I work to restore their self-esteem and to teach them to recognize what they need to do to learn. I enjoy children and trying to teach them new and exciting things. As a teacher with dyslexia I felt that I was unable to teach reading to my students. I went in search of more training and found Alphabetic Phonics a Orton Gillingham program. I have sense used what I learn in the almost 160 hours of training with 11 students and seen progress in all of them. I love working with children and helping fulfill their potential. I like at children as water that must be directed in the right direction. I will do this my trying to find research validated methods of teaching that teaching to all the learning styles. When I was in school, I could always understand or figure out what the teacher was trying to get across. Some students, however, didn’t always understand what was being explained. I was the kid who would rephrase the teacher’s remarks and explain it again in a way that the other students could understand. Not all students understand things in the same way.
