My culmination of experiences over the past twenty years has allowed me to acquire a vast array of knowledge and experiences. As a school counselor, academic, vocational, social, and personal development were the key areas of focus. These unique experiences were facilitated through classroom activities, individual and small group counseling, and consultation with parents, staff, and community resources. As a licensed School Psychologist, intelligence and academic evaluations, program planning, counseling, and consultation with teachers, parents, and administration were my primary duties. I love to help children understand a subject better. It is a great feeling to see a student get the idea after being helped. I believe that every student is capable of learning; it all depends on their learning style. In my masters program and while I have been teaching, I have learned many ways to get students engaged in the material they are learning. Some students learn better with one on one and some do better with group work. You just have to try different approaches until you see which one works best. Sometimes it just depends on what is being taught. If you show interest in the student he/she will show more interest in your class or subject area and do better.

My professional writing experience has has sharpened my ability to communicate and explain information in a variety of ways - a skill that comes in especially handy with students who need a fresh approach to tackling their struggles. I often hear students say, "Now I see - that makes perfect sense!" My professional writing experience includes three syndicated columns. With each new student, I start with getting to know the student as a person - not just for learning style purposes, but also for the student to understand that I am here for him/her. This helps avoid intimidation too, as a straight jump to students' academic challenges can sometimes get your sessions started on the wrong foot.
