I love working with children and believe every child can not only learn, but enjoy learning. I like making learning fun. Some obstacles in learning are based on one's feelings about learning or about a particular subject. Sometimes asking the right questions can unblock the obstacle, leading to a better awareness of one’s abilities and knowledge. In any area I am able to translate my knowledge or find creative ways to express the concepts so another individual may understand. This ability to articulate ideas comes across in a friendly, excited, fun way. I would never make anyone feel inferior or less than smart in the way I teach. I attribute this to my siblings' personal struggles and a sensitivity to them.
I graduated magna cum laude in art, and excelled in all of my classes. At university you write papers in almost all your classes, not just English, and in every class my professors commented on my writing skills. Although I never actually taught a class, I was able to learn how to adapt to the individual needs of a student. Some learn visually, others with games, practice, hands on... and the list continues. I find starting out with the basics and working up to the harder subjects is important. So, with the assignment given I also ask other questions of the student to see if they understand the more basic concepts of the problem as well as answer the question. I find this helps them understand the process more completely and the student ends up giving more complete answers on assignments and exams. At the end of each session I hope the person I am helping better understands the material and can gain a little confidence about the subject.

In conclusion, I think that I can still be successful in teaching. I however, need to find what area that I can be most successful at. I think that with my non-traditional training and experience, that a similar position would give me the opportunity to be most successful. One thing that I have thought a great deal about these past few weeks, is that I am entering middle age and must be a success at something. In the past, I have found the most enjoyment and fulfillment working with special needs and incarcerated students.
