A Little Bit About Me...

I have extensive experience teaching all aspects of English, writing and composition, grammar, and literature. I have taught at University of New Mexico for the past seven years during my graduate work, and as a part-time instructor. In my teaching I commonly have worked one-on-one with students in the writing process. I am also a poet and creative writer with a broad base of knowledge in the humanities and arts to draw from. Though I have been working with college students, I love younger students as well and have much patience and adaptability with learning styles and levels.
I believe that listening is a key to helping a student succeed in a subject matter that may not come easily to them. I believe that in order for students to obtain knowledge, they must develop some level of interest in the subject. As a teacher, I try to understand the student's mind in order to present the material in such a way that it will fit together with the student's preexisting knowledge. If a student is passionate about sports or video games, I try and use examples and metaphors from those respective areas within the lessons. Students must to be shown rather than told why a subject is important, and I believe that effective learning happens when teachers build on the knowledge base that students have already developed experientially throughout their lives.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have classroom experience at the elementary and secondary level. While working on my AA degree I worked at a high school in a Language Arts class. Earlier in my education process I worked in a 2nd grade and a 3rd/4th grade class. I worked as a sub at the middle and high school level. I have extensive knowledge in all Humanities subjects, especially writing skills. I can utilize a myriad of different methods to meet the learning needs of a diverse student population.
